Chapter 11.1 Sophie's IoT-infused evening routine Sophie comes home from work. When she enters the driveway, the front door automatically unlocks as the smart lock picks up her proximity. She opens the door and steps into the corridor. The lights automatically turn on to help her see where she is going. She takes off her coat and shoes and heads toward the kitchen. The house is already comfortably heated as the thermostat detected her proximity when heading home. When entering the kitchen, the smart assistant notifies her that Nico, her husband, has prepared a casserole and left it in the fridge for her to finish. She takes it out of the fridge and puts it directly into the oven, which has been preheated on Sophie's way home. While the casserole is baking, she decides to stream and watch an episode of Black Mirror, one of her favorite series. She sits on the couch and asks the virtual home assistant to turn on the television and start the next episode. The lights dim and Black Mirror starts playing. After 40 minutes, the home assistant turns off the oven and notifies Sophie that the casserole is ready. As Sophie gets up, the episode is paused, and the lights become brighter. She walks to the kitchen to take the casserole out of the oven.

As the evening progresses, the lights slowly turn red, and some calm music starts playing to help them get sleepy for bedtime. Then, at 11 pm, the lights blink twice. Nico programmed this blinking of the lights as a reminder that it's bedtime. Five minutes later, Sophie receives a notification on her activity tracker that it is time to go to bed considering tomorrow's busy schedule and the time she needs to recover from today's activity.
