In the present work, a new approach is presented for the optimization of multi-modal nonlinear programming problems with constraints or a nondifferentiable objective function. The model is applied in the optimization of water distribution networks (WDN). An algorithm is proposed to solve the problem, based on multi-swarm optimization (MSO) with multiple swarms that work corporately-a master swarm and several slave swarms-named multi-swarm corporative particle-swarm optimizer (MSC-PSO). There are discrete and continuous decision variables and the problem can be treated as a mixed discrete nonlinear programming (MDNLP) one. The combinations of the algorithm search parameters are obtained in a simple manner, allowing viable and promising solutions. A benchmark problem from the literature is studied, in which the installation costs of a WDN are to be minimized with a computational time of 50 s. The implementation of the algorithm is proven to be efficient, with reduction in pipe installation cost up to 1.08% when compared with results from the literature. The algorithm is also implemented in a primary network, installed in the town of Esperança Nova, Paraná, Brazil, with reduction of 4.28% in the total cost when compared to the current WDN in operation. The computational time for this case was 69 s.

Abstract-Potable water distribution networks (WDNs) and wastewater collection networks (WWCNs) are the two fundamental constituents of the complex urban water infrastructure. Such water networks require adapted design interventions as part of retrofitting, extension and maintenance activities. Consequently, proper optimization methodologies are required to reduce the associated capital cost while also meeting the demands of acquiring clean water and releasing wastewater by consumers. In this paper, a systematic review of the optimization of both WDNs and WWCNs, from the preliminary stages of development through to the state-of-the-art, is jointly presented. Firstly, both WDNs and WWCNs are conceptually and functionally described along with illustrative benchmarks. The optimization of water networks across both clean and waste domains is then systematically reviewed and organized, covering all levels of complexity from the formulation of cost functions and constraints, through to traditional and advanced optimization methodologies. The rationales behind employing these methodologies as well as their advantages and disadvantages are investigated. The paper then critically discusses current trends and identifies directions for future research by comparing the existing optimization paradigms within WDNs and WWCNs and proposing common research directions for optimizing water networks. Optimization of urban water networks is a multidisciplinary domain, within which this paper is anticipated to be of great benefit to researchers and practitioners.

The analysis of hydraulic behaviour of the water distribution network (WDN) is forefront part of the planning and augmentation of any water supply projects. The desired output parameters such as pipe discharges, hydraulic gradient level (HGL) of nodes, nodal concentrations etc., are normally crisp values assuming crisp input parameters. There are many uncertainties in nodal demands, roughness, length, diameters of pipes, valve operations, water levels in reservoirs, head-discharge characteristics of pumps etc. So the results obtained by traditional method keeping the input parameters as crisp may not give satisfactory performance in practice. Hence taking care of this fact, pipe roughness has been considered as fuzzy parameter in this study. The vertex method has been used to obtain the ordered pair values of pipe roughness at each α-cut level. The hydraulic simulations are done by using EPANET 2 in MATLAB environment. The maximum and minimum values of pipe discharges, nodal HGLs are obtained in single simulation run for each α-cut level. The obtained results are compared with past studies and it is found that current method is effective to analyse the uncertainty problem. This study would help to the decision maker to identify the condition of pipes and consequently the corrective action needed.
