Heterotrophic Nitrogen Fixation at the Hyper-Eutrophic Qishon River and Estuary System

Abstract: Planktonic heterotrophic diazotrophs (N 2-fixers) are widely distributed in marine and freshwater systems, yet limited information is available on their activity, especially in environments with adverse conditions for diazotrophy (e.g., N-rich and oxygenated). Here, we followed the localization and activity of heterotrophic diazotrophs in the hyper-eutrophic N-rich Qishon River-an environment previously considered to be unfavorable for diazotrophy. Our results indicate high heterotrophic N 2 fixation rates (up… Show more

“…Moreover, diazotrophs were found associated to particles collected from sediment traps, which are often rich in TEP, in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (Farnelid et al 2019). Similarly, other studies demonstrated a direct association between TEP, as proxy for “marine/lake snow,” and viable (active) N 2 fixers (Geisler et al 2020).…”

“…Additionally, some Crocosphaera secrete high concentrations of transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) (Sohm et al 2011) surrounding the cells and aggregates (Bonnet et al 2018). TEP was hypothesized to facilitate nutrient recycling and N 2 fixation (Geisler et al 2020 and see the Discussion section). These characteristics may explain why Crocosphaera spp.…”

“…Therefore, eutrophic water will finally lose its original functionality, such as aquatic food production and safe-drinking water supply (Huisman et al 2018). Meanwhile, eutrophication is worldwide environmental problems and have been found in many countries, such as Israel (Geisler et al 2020), Mexico (Caballero and Vazquez 2020) and USA (Tomasko et al 2020). It is summarized that over 75% of the closed water bodies (e.g., lakes, ponds and reservoirs) in Africa, Asia and Latin America have deteriorated largely and encountered some extents of eutrophication since the 1990s (UN-Water 2018).…”
