Despite decades of research and management efforts, eutrophication remains a persistent threat to inland waters. As nutrient pollution intensifies in the coming decades, the implications for aquatic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are poorly defined, particularly the responses of individual GHGs: carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), methane (CH 4 ), and nitrous oxide (N 2 O). The biogeochemical controls of each gas can differ, making it difficult to predict the overall effect of nutrient pollution on the net radiative forcing of aquatic ecosystems. Here, we induced eutrophication of small nitrogen (N)-limited agricultural reservoirs and measured changes in diffusive GHG emissions within a beforeafter-control-impact (BACI) study design during June to September 2021. Each gas exhibited a unique response to 300% increases in primary production, with a shift from an overall CO 2 source to a sink, a modest increase in N 2 O flux, and, unexpectedly, no significant change in CH 4 emissions. The lack of net directional change in CO 2 -equivalent GHG emissions in fertilized reservoirs during the summer contrasts findings from empirical studies of eutrophic lakes. Our findings illustrate the difficulty in extrapolating among different sized ecosystems and suggest that forecast 2-fold increases in agricultural N fertilization by 2050 may not result in consistently elevated GHG emissions during summer, at least from small reservoirs in continental grassland regions.

Lake wetlands play a crucial role in mitigating climate change. Human activities and climate change impact the carbon sequestration capacity of lake wetlands. However, this process is intricate. Clarifying the decisive factors that affect carbon sequestration is crucial for preserving, utilizing, and enhancing the carbon sequestration capacity of plateau lake wetlands. Here we analyzed the regulatory role of land use under policy guidance on the carbon sequestration capacity of the plateau lake wetland of Caohai (CHLW), SW China. The results show that: (1) The cumulative carbon sequestration varied significantly from 1990 to 2020, with the highest carbon sequestration of 15.80 × 105 t C in 1995 and the lowest of 3.18 × 105 t C in 2020, mainly originating from endogenous carbon sequestration within the plateau lake wetlands. (2) As of 2020, the carbon stock of CHLW was approximately 2.54 × 108 t C. (3) The carbon sequestration in CHLW experienced a dynamic change process of decrease-increase-decrease over 30 years, mainly influenced by land use changes under policy regulation, with human and natural factors accounting for 91% and 9%, respectively. (4) Under three simulated scenarios (Q1, Q2, and Q3), the ecological priority scenario exhibited positive regulation on the carbon sequestration of CHLW and the entire protected area in 2030 and 2060, with the highest increase in carbon sequestration. This scenario is consistent with the current conservation policy, indicating that the current protection policy for CHLW is scientifically reasonable. This research demonstrates how land use and climate changes impact carbon storage in wetlands, with consideration of policy guidance. It provides references for utilizing and conserving lake wetlands worldwide, ultimately achieving the dual goals of wetland conservation and carbon neutrality.

This study introduces the concept of “gray carbon,” emphasizing its critical role in carbon sequestration in sewage treatment. By focusing on recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon (RDOC) in sewage effluents and its subsequent transformation in marine environments, we underscore the significant impact of sewage-derived organic carbon on the efficiency of carbon sequestration. Through analysis of carboxylic-rich alicyclic molecules, this study illuminates the convergence in the molecular compositions of RDOC across various aquatic systems. Dark-culture experiments reveal marked variations in the microbial community structures of the aforementioned molecules, indicating that these changes may play an important role in the degradation and subsequent transformation of organic matter in marine environments. These insights lay the groundwork for advancing technologies designed to enhance wastewater alkalinity, which will improve the sustainability of wastewater treatment and preserve marine ecosystems. Enhancing sewage alkalinity can influence microbial processes and chemical equilibria, potentially affecting the formation and accumulation of gray carbon. Further investigation is necessary to understand the potential effect of alkalinity enhancement on the microbial communities and biochemical pathways involved in gray carbon formation. Our findings support the integration of gray carbon strategies into broader carbon neutrality initiatives, providing a scientific and technological blueprint for enhancing global carbon management and mitigating climate change.
