Heterotic strings on $$ \mathbbm{T} $$3/ℤ2, Nikulin involutions and M-theory

Abstract: We first describe the low energy dynamics of ten dimensional heterotic supergravity compactified on the smooth, flat 3-manifold $$ \mathbbm{T} $$ T 3/ℤ2, without supersymmetry, and explain how it arises from flat heterotic gauge fields. The semi-classical theory has both Coulomb and Higgs branches of non-supersymmetric vacua. We then give an exact worldsheet description as asymmetric orbifolds of $$ \mathbbm{T} $$ T 3, where the orbifold gener… Show more

“…We are interested in a particular class of gerbes defined by the following data: a manifold Y = X × S 1 equipped with a closed 1-form Θ and a flat line bundle that is the pull-back of a bundle L → X with flat connection Λ, which is itself a global 1-form on X. 18 In this case, we obtain a flat "vertical" gerbe by setting…”

“…As the recent work[18] indicates, if one is willing to abandon spacetime supersymmetry, then compact flat manifolds already become interesting in compactifications to 7 dimensions.…”
