Heterotheca inuloides (Mexican arnica) metabolites protect Caenorhabditis elegans from oxidative damage and inhibit nitric oxide production

Abstract: We tested a series of compounds derived from Heterotheca inuloides for their ability to protect Caenorhabditis elegans under stressful conditions.

“…41 The complex formed by the addition of an aluminum chloride solution to a methanol solution of extract samples (procedure 1) showed in the UV absorption spectra maximums, characteristic of flavonols, between 410-430 nm, due to the bathochromic shift of the long wavelength band (band 1); when the aluminum complex formation was performed in alkaline solution with addition of sodium nitrite (NaNO 2 ), (procedure 2) a procedure specific for catechins, no absorption was observed at 510 nm. 29,41 Since hyperin (8) The earlier results showed for DPA the highest (92%) reduction effect on Cu 2+ which is in agreement with the antioxidant activity observed in DPPH and TBARS evaluations ( Table 2). DPM was less active than DPA on the inhibition of DPPH radical and TBARS and showed a low 20% of reduction and 80% of chelation with Cu 2+ , which is also a mechanism of the antioxidant capacity.…”

“…The flavonoid content was determined by their capacity to form complexes with aluminum chloride (Sigma Aldrich, St Louis, MO, USA) following procedures 1 and 2. 29 The UV-visible spectral analysis of the complex mixture was recorded in a range 300-600 nm. For the quantitative analysis the absorbance of the samples was measured at 419 nm using as standard hyperin for the calibration curve following procedure 1.…”

“…The acetone extract of H. inuloides also showed the ability to inhibit hatching and reduce the mobility of juveniles (J2) of N. aberrans eggs. The activity against N. aberrans can be explained considering that the H. inuloides acetone extract contains quercetin type flavonoids . Flavonoids such as kaempferol and quercetin act as deterrents, inhibiting peristalsis and the hatching of soil nematodes .…”

“…The activity against N. aberrans can be explained considering that the H. inuloides acetone extract contains quercetin type flavonoids. 37 Flavonoids such as kaempferol and quercetin act as deterrents, inhibiting peristalsis and the hatching of soil nematodes. 23 Also, H. inuloides extracts contain sesquiterpene-type compounds and there is documented evidence indicating that these compounds exhibit nematotoxic and nematicidal activities.…”
