“…In this work, it has been demonstrated that it is indeed possible to grow BTO from this facet when using our SILAR BiOBr/thermal annealing route. In addition, the crystallinity of the BTO material formed in this route is significantly higher than that demonstrated by Zhang et al, 23 a factor which has been demonstrated to be very significant in photocatalysis.…”

“…23 It was concluded that this was due to an inability for BTO to form on the anatase [101] facet under hydrothermal conditions. Using the SILAR/thermal annealing route described here however it appears that it is possible for BTO for form on this facet, and give good photocatalytic activity.…”

“…Figure 4 shows the UV-Vis absorption spectra of the composites BT1 and BT2, as well as pure phase TiO 2 submicron fibers and the Bi 2 Ti 2 O 7 hydrothermal product, which were converted from the corresponding diffusion reflectance spectra using the Kubelka-Munk function [27]. Pure anatase TiO 2 submicron fibers only showed fundamental absorption in the UV-light region, while Bi 2 Ti 2 O 7 displayed a portion of absorption in visible-light region.…”

“…Moreover, it can serve as both reactant and substrate, ensuring close contact between Bi 2 Ti 2 O 7 nanostructures and TiO 2 submicron fibers for uniform growth of a hierarchical configuration. The hydrothermal process was performed in an alkaline environment where an aqueous solution of Bi(NO 3 ) 3 and submicron TiO 2 fibers were used as reactants [2527]. The characterization results indicated that Bi 2 Ti 2 O 7 nanosheets with high crystallinity grew successfully on TiO 2 submicron fibers and well-defined three-dimensional hierarchical heterostructures of Bi 2 Ti 2 O 7 /TiO 2 submicron fibers were formed.…”

“…Among them, bismuth titanates have demonstrated promising optoelectronic properties 3 , such as ferroelectricity, photoconductivity and piezoelectricity 1,[4][5][6] . These characteristics make them an alternative to lead-containing materials, being useful for several devices including optical displays, capacitors, catalysts, sensors and transducers, among other applications [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] . The Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 compound belongs to the Aurivillius family 5,9,16,17 and it has been studied due to its promising piezoelectric and dielectric properties 1 .…”
