Heterosis for yield and quality traits in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Abstract: Twenty F1 hybrids from three CMS lines and eight pollen parents were evaluated to study the heterosis for various yield and quality traits in rice (Oryza sativa L.). The findings suggested that the magnitude of heterosis differed from character to character and cross to cross. Majority of the hybrids recorded desirable heterosis for grain yield. Among the rice hybrids exhibiting high heterosis for grain yield, IR-68897A x Pusa Sugandh-3, IR-58025A x HUR-JM-59221 and IR-58025A x Pusa Sugandh-5 were top performe… Show more

“…Most of the hybrids giving negative heterosis suggesting hybrids matured early than better parent or check variety was also observed in work of Priyanka et al, (2014), Veeresha et al, (2015) Waza et al (2016) and Bano and Singh, (2018). However, Soni and Sharma, (2011) observed positive standard heterosis in most of the rice hybrids studied by them.…”

“…Negative standard heterosis for plant height in rice has been observed by Rahimi et al (2010), andWaza et al (2016) in their studies. However, the positive significant standard heterosis and heterobeltiosis has also been reported by Kumar et al (2012).…”

“…Therefore, selection of only few parents having high genetic potential in crossing programme is essential. In order to exploit the maximum heterosis using CMS system in the hybrid breeding programmes, we must know the combining ability effects of different male sterile and restorer lines for various traits [11,12]. Among the various techniques of combining ability analysis, line × tester analysis has been widely used for screening of germplasm to identify valuable donor parents and promising crosses [13,14,15].…”

“…Moreover, the most important challenge for current system of agriculture and seed production is that the dissemination and adoption STRVs is low mainly due to the lack of information and non-availability of seeds amongst farmers [5,91,163]. The existing system of agricultural extension and seed supply need to be aligned in a way to successfully deliver the proven stress tolerant technology to farmers.…”
