Heterosis and Combining Ability Estimates in F2 Flax Populations as Influenced by Plant Density1

Abstract: Seed yield, its three components (bolls per unit area, seed size, and seeds per boll), oil content, and iodine value were studied in F2 populations of a diallel cross among nine cultivars of flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) at two locations and three plant densities.Average heterosis for yield in F2 was 6% relative to the midparent values. Four F2 populations exceeded in yield the high‐yielding parent by 15 to 19%. One F2 population, ‘Russian’ ✕ C.I. 1664, exceeded by 5.5% the yield of ‘Marine’, the highest yield… Show more

“…These results revealed that additive effect played greater role than non-additive gene effects in the inheritance of seed weight/plant and its two components (1000-seed weight and number of seeds/capsule). Similar results were reported by Shehata and Comstock (1971), Patil and Chopde (1981), Abo-Kaied et al, (2007) and Amany El-Reffaie, (2007).…”

“…On the other hand, many studies investigated combining ability in flax under normal conditions, i.e. Shehata and Comstock (1971), Foster et al, (1998), Patil and Chopde (1981), Patil, et al, (1997), Abo-Kaied (2002), Abo-Kaied (2006) and Amany El-Reffaie (2007).…”

“…Interactions between cultivars and yield structure were described repeatedly (YERMANOS and WORKER 1964, SHEBATA and COMSTOCK 1971, PATIL and CHOPDE 1981. CULBERTSON (1954) could show that quantitatively inherited seed weight was governed by both, additive and dominance effects.…”
