Heteropolymetallic aggregates from [Pd2(dppf)2(µ-S)2]. Bonding and structural analysis of [Ag2Pd2Cl2(dppf)23-S)2]·4CH2Cl2[dppf = Fe(C5H4PPh2)2]—a flat {Pd2S2} core with two AgCl ‘tails’

Abstract: Nucleophilic addition of the heterometallic complex [Pd,(dppf),(p-S),] [dppf = 1,l '-bis(dipheny1phosphino)ferrocene] to [AgCl(PPh,)] or AgCl gave [Ag,Pd,Cl,(dppf),- (p,-S),], the first example of a heteropolymetallic aggregate based on a { Pd,S,} core and whose crystal structure shows a planar { Pd,S,} ring with two protruding AgCl fragments.* A similar result was obtained for Pt and Pd phosphine acetates," Pd phosphine acetates are known to be unstable.

“…20 This could well explain why the complexes of formula [Pd 2 L 4 -(µ-S) 2 ], L 4 = 4 unidentate or 2 bidentate phosphine ligands, are poorly characterised and its chemistry virtually unknown. 21 The crystal structure of the triplatinum complex 2 shows the presence of chloride counter ions. As this complex forms easily by dissolving 1 in CHCl 3 or CH 2 Cl 2 the only possible source of the chloride ions is the solvent molecules.…”

“…62 The latter has been the subject of investigations into its reactivity towards BiC1363 and C O C ~, ~~ whiIe the related species [Pd,(dppf),(p-S),] has been shown to undergo nucleophilic addition with AgC1. 65 Bidentate ligands of the type [Ex]'-are well known. ExampIes of the smallest, (x = 2) form when [TiHCp*2 J reacts with two equivalents of selenium or tellurium.…”
