Heteronormativity and the Justification of Gender Hierarchy: Investigating the Archival Data From 16 European Countries

Abstract: Within the framework of the System Justification Theory, this study tested on the archival data from 16 European countries the general hypothesis that homonegativity (HN), as an expression of gender binarism and heteronormativity, works as a legitimizing myth of gender hierarchy. Specifically, we hypothesized that (1) system justification (SJ) would positively relate to HN and (2) this relation would depend on the country level of gender hierarchy, (3) on the gender of respondents, and (4) on the interaction b… Show more

“…Furthermore, there is evidence to suggest that LGBTQþ people view gender as a heteronormative binary (Rocha Baptista and de Loureiro Himmel, 2016;Ferrari and Mancini, 2020;Kowalsky and Scheitle, 2020) with high levels of sexism, particularly where conservative ideologies are present (Tatum and Ross, 2020;L opez-S aez and Platero, 2022). “…This heterosexual male hierarchy binarises gender and sexual orientation and gives rise to homonegativity or the negative attitude towards sexual divergence. 3 Genderfication, the binarised view of gender, involves the standardisation of gender within the heteronormative construct of male/female, boy/girl.…”

“…The concept of heteronormativity is grounded in post‐structuralist feminist theory where heterosexual male dominance is critiqued as both a societal norm and social conditioning. This heterosexual male hierarchy binarises gender and sexual orientation and gives rise to homonegativity or the negative attitude towards sexual divergence 3 . Genderfication, the binarised view of gender, involves the standardisation of gender within the heteronormative construct of male/female, boy/girl.…”

“…Heterosexism has, therefore, historically caused and reproduced a wide range of stereotypes, prescribing the acceptable identities and expected behaviors and marginalizing any other type of nonconforming expressions and existences (Marchia and Sommer 2019). Most who do not conform to a binary gender and hetero and mono-normative sexualities and intimacies are exposed to discrimination and other forms of unequal treatment (Ferrari et al 2021).…”
