Heteroleptic zinc dipyrromethene complexes

Abstract: 1 H NMR spectroscopy has been used to study the complexation of a per-alkyl dipyrromethene with zinc acetate. An intermediate, assigned to be the heteroleptic Zn(dipyrromethene)(acetate) complex, is observed under titration conditions although only zinc(dipyrromethene) 2 is obtained after simple work-up. This indicates that disproportionation occurs during work-up and that dipyrromethene complexation does not occur under self-assembled control.

“…Of the three ancillary ligands examined, pentane-2,4-dione (acac), 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione, and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedione (dpm), pure heteroleptic complexes were successfully isolated only using the dpm ligand. As seen for other heteroleptic Zn complexes, 43 , 56 zDIP2′ and zDIP3′ disproportionate to their respective homoleptic complexes (zDIP2 and zDIP3) in chloroform over the course of several hours, as observed by NMR measurements (see SI ). However, zDIP2′ and zDIP3′ are stable in the solid state and can be sublimed under vacuum without disproportionation.…”

“…Despite the difference in structure of quenchers 6 and 7, their absorption maxima are similar (557 and 559 nm respectively) and in line with previous studies [16,17]. Their B bands (Soret bands) are in the range of approximately 590-610 and 580-605 nm respectively.…”

“…However, mono(dipyrrinato)zinc(II) complexes easily decomposed, or they disproportionated into the corresponding bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(II) complexes 6. 7 Thus, the improvement of ϕ F in dipyrrinato zinc(II) complexes leaves room for further investigation.…”
