Heterogeneous Fleets of Active and Passive Floating Sensors for River Studies

Abstract: Lagrangian sensing for tracing hydrodynamic trajectories is an innovative approach for studying estuarial environments. Actuated Lagrangian sensors are capable of avoiding obstacles and navigating when active and retain a passive hydrodynamic profile that is suited for Lagrangian sensing when passive. A heterogeneous fleet of actuated and passive drifting sensors is presented. Data assimilation using a high-performance computing (HPC) cluster that runs the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is an essential componen… Show more

“…Generally, in electronic packaging, consumer electronics, and nanomaterials fabrication, the term describes the physical size and shape of a material or device that represents a class of similarly sized components and prescribes a specific standard. [159][160][161] Many people have adopted new lifestyles created by wearable technology in revolutionary form factors: glasses, goggles, wristwatches, bracelets, armbands, rings, gloves, necklaces, pins, headsets, and clothes. By contrast, WFHE continues to expand by adding unique characteristics and unprecedented attributes in which the value is adjusted with respect to the skin interface.…”

“…Form factor is a combination of various factors of a device determined mostly by its size, shape, and other physical arrangements. Generally, in electronic packaging, consumer electronics, and nanomaterials fabrication, the term describes the physical size and shape of a material or device that represents a class of similarly sized components and prescribes a specific standard . Many people have adopted new lifestyles created by wearable technology in revolutionary form factors: glasses, goggles, wristwatches, bracelets, armbands, rings, gloves, necklaces, pins, headsets, and clothes.…”

“…Water surface drifting buoys have been proposed as a possible tool to facilitate the collection of hydrological information in rivers and riverine environments [12][13][14][15][16]. Water surface drifting buoys (hereafter referred to simply as "drifters") are floating bodies equipped with sensors and/or communication systems that passively follow the movements of water surfaces, collecting information about their movement and/or their surrounding environment.…”

“…[53] The term "form factor" of a device mainly describes its physical size and shape along with other physical arrangements. [53,179,180] For a wearable device to become significant and viable in terms of wearability and functionality, it should be small and thin in form factor. Several techniques are used by the researchers to improve the form factor of a wearable device including the miniaturization of all layers of a device, [181] designing batteryfree self-powered devices, [77,138] integrating sensing layer with existing wireless technologies, [78,154,157] using dry and gel-free adhesive with effective encapsulation, [21,182] etc.…”
