Heterogeneous catalytic activation of peroxydisulfate toward degradation of pharmaceuticals diclofenac and ibuprofen using scrap printed circuit board

Abstract: Scrap printed circuit boards were used to prepare a low-cost and efficient heterogeneous peroxydisulfate catalytic activator for the removal of diclofenac and ibuprofen from water at circumneutral pH.

“…, and carbonate anion radicals (CO 3 2− → • CO 3 − + e − ; E = +1.81 V). These free radicals are the most common ROS that are responsible for oxidizing pharmaceuticals in aqueous solutions or on catalyst surfaces [61,62]. Among the AOPs, UV-H 2 O 2 , Fenton and photo-Fenton, ozone-based processes, sonolysis, and photocatalysis, as individuals or a combination of them, have been demonstrated to be feasible to degrade pharmaceutical compounds in aqueous solutions [24].…”

“…These ions can then be removed through conventional methods, such as chemical precipitation, adsorption, coagulation, or ion exchange. Meanwhile, the AOPs also enable the oxidation of complexing agents into environmentally benign byproducts, such as water, CO 2 , and inorganic salts 183 AOPs encompass a variety of techniques, including Fenton oxidation, ozonation, photocatalytic, ozonation photocatalytic oxidation, non-thermal plasma, UV/H 2 O 2 , as well as their combinations. 181,184,185 These processes generate various reactive oxygen species (ROS), primarily the hydroxyl radical (cOH), which acts as a non-selective and powerful oxidant for decomposing metal-ligand complexes (Fig.…”

“…[9] This process provides environmental-friendly methods with a high oxidation potential that utilize a variety of radicals, such as hydroxyl radicals (OH * ) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 *À ), for the degradation of organic pollutants. [10][11][12][13] Inspired by this, we developed a strategy for the radicalbased degradation of organic coatings (Figure 1). As the coatings are composed of organic molecules or polymers, it is anticipated that various organic coatings are possible to be degraded through advanced oxidation processes that have been previously developed.…”
