Heterogeneous and compensatory growth in Melithaea flabellifera (Octocorallia: Melithaeidae) in Japan

Abstract: Melithaea flabellifera (Ku¨kenthal, 1909) (Octocorallia, Gorgonacea), an endemic and predominant gorgonian in Japanese shallow waters, grows mostly in one plane and ramifies in a dichotomous way. The growth rates of all branches and of the colony were measured from photographs of tagged gorgonian corals for approximately 1 year from June 1995 to May 1996 on the western Pacific coast of Japan (34°39¢ N, 138°56¢ E). The most rapid growth occurred when the water temperature was less than 20°C. Mean growth ranged… Show more

“…A difference in water temperature of ca. 1°C can be a trigger to accelerate gonad development in the early stages of reproduction, and it can cause a difference of 2 wk to 1 mo in the date when planulae shedding occurs (Matsumoto 1997(Matsumoto , 2004. Salinity was stable in all dives in the present and previous study (Miyake et al 2004).…”

“…All data were calculated from the BS diameters 0.8, 1.2, and 1.6 cm, respectively. NA: not available Velimirov 1995, Andrews et al 2002, Lasker et al 2003, Matsumoto 2004). The number of branch tips in each colony was used for the parameter of fan shape and growth.…”

“…Underwater photography has been used successfully for gorgonian species growing in a 2D plane (e.g. Matsumoto 2003). However, E. verrucosa colonies can exhibit a 3D morphology giving the colony a bushy form.…”
