Heterogeneity of adaptive features among psychopathy variants.

Abstract: Psychopathic personality traits can be conceptualized as a complex network of adaptive and maladaptive traits. Although general positive adjustment has been related to primary psychopathy and to increased emotional stability, no study focused on the distribution of specific adaptive traits through psychopathy variants. Participants were 2291 French college students who completed self-report questionnaires. A cluster analysis, based on a four-factor model of psychopathy (antagonism, narcissism, disinhibition, a… Show more

“…The Elemental Psychopathy Assessment/EPA concept developed on the basis of the FFM (Lynam et al, 2011) does not explicitly indicate which of the basic features of psychopathy should be described as adaptive. However, among the four factors forming the structure of psychopathic personality-interpersonal antagonism, narcissism, disinhibition and emotional stability-the last one is most related to the indicators of positive adjustment (Bronchain et al, 2020). Similar conclusions could be based on data obtained in analyses conducted with HEXACO, which reveal a convergence of the boldness factor from the triarchic conception of psychopathy with personality measures of extraversion and emotional stability (Marcus et al, 2019;Collison et al, 2021).…”

“…Psychopathy is a multifaceted construct with various manifestations depending on the specific phenotypic expression of traits (Bronchain, Raynal, & Chabrol, 2019;Hare, 1993). Prominent models of psychopathy attempt to articulate the various facets that define psychopathy (e.g., the Triarchic Model of Psychopathy; Patrick & Drislane, 2015).…”

“…Therefore, the heterogeneity of diverse features (e.g., adaptive traits, emotional stability, social anxiety, and so on) among psychopathy clusters should be explored (see Refs. [29,30]).…”

“…On the other hand, some studies focused on adaptive traits or functions by psychopathic variants. For example, the primary group displayed the high level of leadership, logical thinking, focus, management, and money smarts, whereas the secondary group exhibited less adaptive psychopathic traits [30].…”
