Heterogeneity and diversity of ABO and Rh blood group genes in select Saudi Arabian populations

Abstract: ABSTRACT. In order to investigate the diversity of ABO and Rh blood group genes in the Saudi Arabian population, we assembled the phenotypic data of approximately 66,000 subjects from ten representative Saudi populations: Al-Khobar, Riyadh, Tabuk/Madina Al-Munawaara, Jeddah, Abha, South region, Sakaka, Domah, Al-Qurayat, and Sweer.

“…Furthermore, the loss of heterozygosity observed in rs2066845 may be because of widespread consanguinity in the Saudi population. Similar observations were made by AlSuhaibani et al (2015) in their study on ABO and Rh blood group polymorphisms in a Saudi population (AlSuhaibani et al, 2015).…”

“…However, reports of blood group phenotypes in Saudi Arabia are limited to the ABO and RhD blood group systems. [3][4][5][6][7] No reports on the distribution of the various blood group phenotypes are available in the Eastern region of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is a large and multi-national country with a diverse ethnic background, particularly in the East and West because of its proximity to the sea, resulting in a long history of immigration.…”
