Background Hypertrophic scars, commonly occurring after trauma or surgery in critical areas like the head and joints, pose significant challenges to both physical and mental health due to their impact on skin function and aesthetics. While the complex pathogenesis involves fibroblast activation and collagen deposition, effective treatments are lacking, underscoring the importance of exploring pathogenesis and targeted therapies. Hesperidin, a bioactive compound in citrus fruits with diverse health benefits, including anti-fibrotic and anti-angiogenic effects, is the focus of this study with the aim of investigating its impact on hypertrophic scar formation, given its potential to promote blood flow and improve skin microcirculation. Objective This study aimed to observe the inhibitory effect of topical hesperidin on hypertrophic scars in rabbits. Methods A total of 8 healthy adult New Zealand white rabbits were used to establish a rabbit hypertrophic scarring animal model. Five wounds were created on each rabbit’s two ears, with three wounds on the left ear (groups A, B, and C) and two wounds on the right ear (groups D and E). After six days of wound drying postoperatively, the wounds were locally treated with medication as followed: group A, 0.1% hesperidin; group B, 1% hesperidin; group C, 1% triamcinolone acetonide; group D, Vaseline; and group E, blank control without any medication. After 28 days, the scar tissue samples were collected for histological examination. Results The results showed that the scar texture of groups B and C was softer and lighter in color, and the number of fibroblasts, capillaries, and inflammatory cells in the tissue was significantly less than those in the other three groups. The hypertrophic scar indices of groups B and C were significantly smaller than those of groups A, D, and E, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). There were no significant difference between groups B and C. Conclusion Topical application of hesperidin demonstrated promising potential for reducing hypertrophic scar formation in rabbits.

A condição conhecida como hiperplasia prostática benigna (HPB) é uma ocorrência comum em homens mais velhos, caracterizada pelo aumento benigno da próstata, que pode levar a sintomas urinários incômodos e afetar significativamente a qualidade de vida. A HPB é uma preocupação de saúde significativa em todo o mundo, afetando a maioria dos homens idosos em maior ou menor grau. Embora não seja uma condição fatal por si só, pode causar complicações graves se não for tratada adequadamente. O tratamento da hiperplasia prostática benigna visa aliviar os sintomas, melhorar a função urinária e reduzir o risco de complicações associadas. Existem várias opções de tratamento disponíveis, que variam de intervenções não invasivas a procedimentos cirúrgicos mais complexos, dependendo da gravidade dos sintomas e das preferências do paciente. Para iniciar o processo de revisão, foi realizada uma busca na base de dados eletrônicas PubMed, com o objetivo de identificar estudos publicados nos últimos 3 anos (2021 a 2024) que abordassem avanços no tratamento da HPB. Os descritores MESH específicos utilizados foram “Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia”, “Treatment”, “Therapeutics”, “Drug therapy”. Esses termos foram selecionados para garantir a inclusão de estudos que abordassem diferentes aspectos relacionados ao tratamento da HPB, desde novas terapias até diretrizes de manejo e previsões para o futuro. Os resultados desta revisão destacam a eficácia de intervenções não invasivas, como modificações no estilo de vida e terapias medicamentosas, na melhoria dos sintomas urinários e na qualidade de vida dos pacientes com HPB leve a moderada.

Research on the potential anticancer effects of citrus has been widely published in scientific journals. Still, a bibliometric analysis concerning this topic has not been executed. This study employed bibliometric mapping to analyze articles related to citrus anticancer from the Scopus Database and visualized the results using the VOSviewer. In this review, 442 papers published between 1995 and 2023 were selected. Jeju National University in South Korea is recognized as a top contributor. According to the analysis, apoptosis and anticancer are the two specific keywords in the field with the highest co-occurrence. The other keywords in the selected papers were hesperidin, naringenin, nobiletin, apoptosis, and flavonoids. We also found the following steps in this research area: formulation, synthesis, and in vivo preclinical studies. Research trends have shifted from the crude extract to practical applications of specific flavonoid compounds with structure modification to improve their anticancer properties. Still, clinical trials in humans are lacking in this research area and should be further investigated to embrace citrus flavonoids as an anticancer candidate. This analysis and mapping provide a comprehensive understanding of research on the potential anticancer effect of citrus.
