Hesitant or not? A global survey of potential acceptance of a COVID-19 vaccine

Abstract: A number of COVID-19 vaccines are under development, with one or more possibly becoming available in 2021. We conducted a global survey in June 2020 of 13,426 people in 19 countries to determine potential acceptance rates of a COVID-19 vaccine and factors influencing acceptance. We ran univariate logistic regressions to examine the associations with demographic variables. 71.5% reported they would be very or somewhat likely to take a COVID-19 vaccine; 61.4% reported they would accept their employer's recommend… Show more

“…The majority of past research regarding vaccine uptake was undertaken prior to the pandemic when vaccines against COVID-19 did not exist; other research was limited in its research cohort, e.g. focusing only on healthcare professionals [7,8,9,10]. This means that the extant literature may not represent an accurate indicator of the probability of vaccine acceptance due to the fact that the ways in which the general public perceives the pandemic and potential vaccines will change with changes in circumstances.…”

“…In response to the 2009 pandemic of H1N1 Influenza the United States achieved a weekly vaccination rate of only 1% of the population (72). Vaccine refusers may include 30% of the population in North America and globally (72,75), and if they have "increased contact rates relative to the rest of the population, vaccination alone may not be able to prevent an outbreak (page 817)" (72). There is already competition among high income countries, and likely crowding out of low-income countries that represent about half of the human population (76).…”

“…A proportion of the Bangladeshi population are hesitating to take the vaccine from India lest they should be infected [11]. A global survey of potential COVID-19 vaccine acceptance shows that 48% of their study population were confused about the COVID-19 vaccinations and remained unsure about whether they would have the vaccination [12]. Similarly, a Chinese study found that only just over half of their participants (54.%) said that they intended to have the vaccination [13].…”
