Herpes Simplex Virus Epidemiology and Ocular Importance

Abstract: Herpes simplex is a significant health concern at present with genital infections increasing in epidemic proportions. This is also reflected in a rise in the incidence of neonatal herpes. Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection is being acquired for the first time in an older age group. A significant and increasing proportion of genital herpes is caused by HSV-1. Serologic studies are no longer as useful in distinguishing orofacial herpes from genital herpes. More acute retinal necrosis syndrome cases ar… Show more

“…The exact characterization of immune-escape mechanisms is even more important for individuals undergoing chemotherapy, organ-or bone marrow-transplant recipients and patients suffering from HIV infection. These patients can develop multiple and extensive lesions and, in some cases, visceral spread may occur (Liesegang, 2001;Stewart et al, 1995).In this study, we have provided evidence that DCs infected with HSV-1 show a significant change in their expression profiles of the CCR7 and CXCR4 chemokine receptors. These data were initially achieved by gene-chip analyses and confirmed by RT-PCR.…”

“…It is also responsible for neonatal morbidity, a co-factor for HIV transmission, particularly in developing countries (Patel and Rompalo, 2005), and it is also involved in several ocular diseases (Liesegang, 2001;Pepose et al, 2006). The two forms of Herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 e HSV-2) are morphologically similar and produce indistinguishable characteristics during the initial infection.…”

“…Estima-se que no mundo 60%-70% das crianças com cinco anos de idade e aproximadamente 90% dos adultos apresentam soropositividade para os antígenos do HSV-1. Destes apenas 20%-30% apresentam sinais clínicos da doença, e as manifestações oculares ocorrem em menos de 1% (1)(2) .…”
