“…The structure of virus particles seen in the present study resembles those of Herpes simplex (Morgan, Ellison, Rose, and Moore, 1954;Stoker, Smith, and Ross, 1958;Morgan, Rose, Holden, and Jones, 1959;Epstein, 1962;Swanson, Craighead, and Reynolds, 1966;Itabashi et al, 1966;Chou and Cherry, 1967;Harland, Adams, and McSeveney, 1967). The fact that they are seen mostly within the nuclei is also in conformity with the observations of these authors.…”

“…Both are of the greatest value and, provided the virologist is warned before the operation takes place so that the appropriate material can be collected, a precise diagnosis may be possible within a few hours of collecting the specimen. Harland et al (1967) have reported six fatal cases in which virus particles were demonstrated in brain material and one further case treated with IDU.…”

“…Our laboratory does not have an electron microscope so this examination was only available on five brain extracts; only one showed herpes group particles. Electron microscopy on sections from five of the patients (Harland, Adams & McSeveney, 1967) was more rewarding, four of the five being positive; however, this latter procedure was done only on brains which had been stored in formalin from 3 weeks to 5 years, and therefore did not contribute to a rapid diagnosis.…”
