Herpes Simplex and Herpes Zoster Eye Disease

Abstract: Acute HZO was seen more commonly than ocular HSV infection. Patients with HZO were significantly older than those with ocular HSV infection. Available prevention modalities, such as the vaccine against herpes zoster and long-term oral antiviral therapy to reduce ocular HSV infection recurrence, were underused.

“…We were unable to replicate previously reported risk factors including immunosuppression, female gender, older age, and absence of zoster vaccination. 8-10,13,31-34 The low numbers of females, immunosuppressed and vaccinated patients in our cohort may have limited our power to demonstrate differences in recurrence risk.…”

“…2-7 Immunosuppression and the immunosenescence of aging have been associated with an increased risk of developing HZ. 8-10 The most common long term complication of HZ is postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), or persistent neuropathic pain lasting beyond three months after initial presentation of HZ. PHN can negatively affect quality of life to a degree similar to congestive heart failure, depression, acute myocardial infarction, diabetes.…”

“…A significant fraction of HZ patients develop difficult-to-treat chronic pain states termed post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), which can be so severe that they reduce quality-of-life. HZ may also be followed by neurological, gastrointestinal, and vascular diseases [2][3][4], as well as potentially blinding complications that develop after facial zoster [5].…”
