HERMES: a soft X-ray beamline dedicated to X-ray microscopy

Abstract: The HERMES beamline (High Efficiency and Resolution beamline dedicated to X-ray Microscopy and Electron Spectroscopy), built at Synchrotron SOLEIL (Saint-Auban, France), is dedicated to soft X-ray microscopy. The beamline combines two complementary microscopy methods: XPEEM (X-ray Photo Emitted Electron Microscopy) and STXM (Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy) with an aim to reach spatial resolution below 20 nm and to fully exploit the local spectroscopic capabilities of the two microscopes. The availabili… Show more

“…XANES data were collected on the 10ID-1 STXM beamline ( Kaznatcheev et al, 2007 ) at the Canadian Light Source (CLS) and on the HERMES STXM beamline ( Belkhou et al, 2015;Swaraj et al, 2017 ) at the synchrotron SOLEIL. At CLS, a 100 nm thick titanium filter is used to remove the contribution of second order light while at SOLEIL, beamline optical elements are exposed to a continuous flow of pure O 2 to remove carbon contamination.…”

“…The design parameters for FZP with outermost line widths below 10 nm were chosen to match the experimental conditions at the scanning transmission X-ray microscopes (STXM) at the PolLux and Hermes beamlines at the Swiss Light Source and Synchrotron Soleil [14,15]. Special attention has been given to the illumination conditions at these beamlines to ensure that the zone plate dimensions match the coherence length and energy bandwidth.…”
