Kampung Kuchai was founded in 1900 by Toh Puan Saripah Rodziah and her husband; Seri Adika Raja Wan Mohammad Salleh. It is claimed that the Kampung Kuchai settlement was the starting point of the City of Ipoh. During its glorious time, Kampung Kuchai comprises a house of worship (mosque), Malay mansions, rows of shophouses, schools, and a government clinic. Hence, to restore the identity of Kampung Kuchai, this project applied a cultural heritagebased trails approach to identifying elements left in this kampong by using site observation and questionnaire survey. The site observation shows that some buildings and spaces are still worth conserving. The survey conducted among the local visitors of the Old Town of Ipoh helps to identify the visitors’ favourable needs in establishing a successful heritage trail of Kampung Kuchai. Through appropriate actions taken from all parties involved and considering findings gained by the surveys, the heritage assets of Kampung Kuchai will consistently be recognized and appreciated. Introducing a new heritage trail of Kampung Kuchai could help promote the culture and uniqueness of this place.

La arquitectura patrimonial representa la memoria histórica de los pueblos, forma parte del patrimonio nacional e incentiva el turismo cultural. Por lo tanto, es un derecho de todo ciudadano acceder y difundirla, sin embargo, en el Ecuador existen bienes abandonados con alto grado de deterioro, producto del desconocimiento, la falta de mantenimiento, así como del empleo de tecnologías inapropiadas en las tareas de intervención, conservación y gestión. El análisis del caso de estudio Casa Hacienda Isla El Bejucal (Baba, Ecuador), considerada un bien patrimonial según el inventario oficial y ficha vigente No. IBI-12-02-52-000-000002 del año 2012, ilustra esta situación. Se recopila información mediante la revisión bibliográfica, y la inclusión de métodos y técnicas como la observación de campo, las entrevistas a actores clave y las fichas técnicas de valoración. También se busca conocer experiencias y realidades similares, a fin de realizar un modelo de gestión de la información mediante la metodología HBIM, por tal, el modelo tridimensional del bien patrimonial se construye mediante parámetros de familias que conforman los niveles LOD 100, LOD 200 y LOD 350. Estos productos proporcionan información fundamental para las disciplinas involucradas en la gestión HBIM y las acciones de conservación, difusión, gestión e integración de proyectos arquitectónicos, tales como los asociados a las casas de haciendas individuales, pero también de aquellas haciendas cacaoteras del área de Vinces, las cuales definen un circuito de interés arquitectónico, urbano, social y cultural.

In artificial intelligence (AI), generative systems, most notably Midjourney, have tremendous power to generate creative images of buildings and sites of Islamic architectural heritage through text-to-image generation based on the internet. The AI-generated representations have significant potential for architects, specialists, and everyday users. However, the system has considerable limitations when generating images for some buildings and sites where the representations appear too far from their original represented structures. Evaluating Midjourney as an architectural virtual lab, this research article attempts to define the major current limitations of using Midjourney’s AI system in producing images similar to the actual buildings and sites of Islamic architectural heritage. This research employs prompt engineering techniques based on historical sources as inputs to examine the accuracy of the output of the AI-generated images of selected examples of structures of the Islamic tradition. To validate the research results, it compares the Midjourney output with the original look by employing direct observation through critical analysis of human intelligence (HI) facilitated by the analysis of the latest version of 3M Visual Attention Software and an online survey. It concludes that while Midjourney can represent high-end AI-generated images inspired by the Islamic tradition, it currently falls short of presenting the actual appearance of some of its original structures. Furthermore, it categorizes these limitations into four groups: (1) limits of the prompt, (2) limits of fame, (3) limits of regionality and historical styles, and (4) limits of architectural elements and details. The significance of this research lies in providing timely evaluation factors to architectural heritage practitioners and software developers. This practical article is the second in a series of two sequential articles in the Buildings journal; the first (theoretical) article introduces the concept of Artificial Intelligence Islamic Architecture (AIIA), answering the question: what is Islamic architecture in the age of artificial intelligence?
