Heritable and Nonheritable Rumen Bacteria Are Associated with Different Characters of Lactation Performance of Dairy Cows

Abstract: Rumen bacteria produce volatile fatty acids which exert a far-reaching influence on hepatic metabolism, mammary gland metabolism, and animal production. In the current study, 32 heritable and 674 nonheritable bacterial taxa at species level were identified, and shown to have different microbiability (overall community contribution) and mean microbiability (the average of a single taxon’s contribution) for lactation performance.

“…The animal care and experimental procedures were approved by the Animal Care Committee of Zhejiang University (Hangzhou, China). Seventeen pairs of mother cows and their respective offspring were selected from a cohort of 361 healthy mid-lactation Holstein dairy cows housed at a commercial dairy farm [ 6 ], based on their pedigree records. The animals were reared under the same dairy farm environment and management with a concentrate-to-forage ratio of 57:43 (dry matter basis) [ 6 ].…”

The animals were reared under the same dairy farm environment and management with a concentrate-to-forage ratio of 57:43 (dry matter basis) [ 6 ]. Rumen contents were collected using an oral stomach tube before morning feeding and were used to measure volatile fatty acids (VFAs).…”

“…The scale of broad-sense heritability ranges from 0 to 1, where a value of 1 indicates that all variance is attributed to genetics. Heritability was classi ed into high (H 2 > 0.4), moderate (0.2 < H 2 < 0.4) and low (H 2 < 0.2) based on the range of the values (Zang et al 2022).…”
