Herbivore exposure alters ion fluxes and improves salt tolerance in a desert shrub

Abstract: Plants have evolved complex mechanisms that allow them to withstand multiple environmental stresses, including biotic and abiotic stresses. Here, we investigated the interaction between herbivore exposure and salt stress of Ammopiptanthus nanus, a desert shrub. We found that jasmonic acid (JA) was involved in plant responses to both herbivore attack and salt stress, leading to an increased NaCl stress tolerance for herbivore‐pretreated plants and increase in K+/Na+ ratio in roots. Further evidence revealed the… Show more

“…Resistance to herbivores can also improve plant salt tolerance by inducing the accumulation of JA. 223 When plants are invaded by pathogens, they activate SA biosynthesis and induce systemic acquired resistance (SAR), whereas abiotic stress-induced ABA can inhibit SAR. 186 The SA-induced apoplast peptide hormone PLANT NATRIURETIC PEPTIDE A (PNP-A) can also effectively antagonize SA-mediated plant stress responses.…”

“…The principle of NMT is to use the ion diffusion concentration difference into the potential difference so as to obtain the ion concentration, velocity, and direction (Hawkins & Robbins, 2010; Luo, Li, et al, 2013; Luo, Qin, & He, 2013). This methodology can be used for measuring instantaneous, dynamic ion absorption rates in vivo (Chen et al, 2020; Sa et al, 2019; Tang et al, 2016; Zhang et al, 2014; Zhou et al, 2020) and therefore enables direct assessment of potential, root‐area‐specific ion fluxes as affected by growth conditions. Besides, the technique can also be applied to mycorrhiza, as described in Sa et al (2019).…”
