Herbicide Safeners: Effective Tools to Improve Herbicide Selectivity

Abstract: derivatives among which , -dithiolane derivative showed higher activity than the oxathiolanes. Various , -dioxolane--ones provided significant protection against the acetochlor. "enzo[ , ]-dioxoles were ineffective while benzo [ , ]dioxin--ones were protective in safening maize. -Dichloromethyl--substituted-isoxazoles were also active safeners.Unfortunately, no publication has been reported for the other chemistry of safeners. However, no unifying structural motifs for compounds to be safeners can be predicted… Show more

“…The results in this study showed that the GSH content, GST activity in vivo, and ALS activity were increased by safeners treatment under laboratory condition, which is in agreement with previous studies (Jablonkai, 2013). Without imazethapyr application, seed treatment with these safeners also promoted the increase of GST activity in vitro and affinity of GST enzyme.…”

“…In 1947, Hoffman realized that safener was a useful tool to protect crop from herbicide injury. Nearly 20 safeners has subsequently been developed and commercialized by famous agrochemical companies (Jablonkai, 2013). While the exact mechanism of safener is still not completely understood, it seems that safeners could increase crop tolerance by inducing the activity of detoxifying enzyme glutathione S-transferases (GST) and content of glutathione (GSH) involved in detoxification of exogenous compounds (Del Buono and Ioli, 2011;Matola and Jablonkai, 2007).…”

“…As response to treatment with safener, the content of GSH in maize increased significantly. The increase of GSH induced by safener has also been reported previously (Jablonkai, 2013). …”

“…In the late 1940s, the phenomenon of herbicide safener was discovered serendipitously by Otto Hoffman. The products of safener were subsequently commercialized by agrochemical companies intensively in late 20 th century (Jablonkai, 2013). Nevertheless intensive research has been conducted in recent years; the exact mechanism of safener is incompletely understood (Hull et al, 2008).…”

“…Most enzymatic reactions in plants are stereoselective; thus, the biological activity of the two optically active enantiomers of 3-dichloroacetyl-2,2-dimethyl-4-ethyl-1,3-oxazolidine and racemate could be different because of their chirality (Kang et al 2005;Sriharsha and Shashikanth 2006). However, few studies have investigated the detoxification mechanisms of chiral safener (Jablonkai 2013). In previous studies, we have synthesized chiral 3-dichloroacetyl-substituted oxazolidines successfully and investigated their bioactivity as safeners of chlorsulfuron (Zhao et al 2012(Zhao et al , 2014.…”
