Although water constitutes 71% of the earth's surface, only 0.3% of it is available as fresh water for human use. Moreover, the quality of fresh water in ground and surface systems is of great concern, as potable water needs to have appropriate mineral content. Ground and surface water quality in rural and urban environments is affected by both natural processes and anthropogenic influences. Because of this, water is becoming scarcer as the population increases across the world. Natural processes leading to changes in water quality include weathering of rocks, evapotranspiration, depositions due to wind, leaching from soil, run-off due to hydrological factors, and biological processes in the aquatic environment. These natural processes cause changes in the pH and alkalinity of the water, and also phosphorus loading, increase in fluoride content and high concentrations of sulphates. Anthropogenic factors affecting water quality include impacts due to agriculture, use of fertilizers, manures and pesticides, animal husbandry activities, inefficient irrigation practices, deforestation of woods, aquaculture, pollution due to industrial effluents and domestic sewage, mining, and recreational activities. These anthropogenic influences cause elevated concentrations of heavy metals, mercury, coliforms and nutrient loads. This paper studies the effects of natural processes and human influences in rural and urban aquatic systems. Pollution due to environmental parameters such as heavy metal pollution, heavy metals and bacterial and pathogenic contamination of both urban and rural areas is discussed in detail.

Herbicide usage has increased dramatically during the last two decades coinciding with the change in farming practices and increasingly intensive agriculture. This study thus assesses herbicide occurrence in the ground water of Delhi i.e. Atrazine and Simazine herbicide. Liquid-liquid extraction with dichloromethane and methanol as extracting solvents were used. These extracted herbicides were separated and quantified by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet detector. The excellent results were achieved with spiked recoveries of 96.8% and 84.6 % for atrazine and simazine respectively. Analysis shows that the concentration of simazine was higher as compared to atrazine. The results obtained were compared with WHO limit of 0.002 mg/l and USEPA limit of 0.003 mg/l for Atrazine and 0.004 mg/l for Simazine. Highest concentration of atrazine was recorded in the north region of Delhi. Sample from the central Delhi did not reveal contamination from any of the herbicides being monitored. The results indicate that there is need for further work to identify sources and fate of herbicide contaminations. The findings of our investigation contribute to the knowledge of the extent of pollution in the groundwater of Delhi.

Neste trabalho, um método para determinação dos agrotóxicos carbofurano, clomazona, 2,4-D e tebuconazol em águas subterrâneas é descrito. O método utiliza a Extração em Fase Sólida (EFS) com cartuchos de C18 e quantificação por Cromatografia Líquida de Alta eficiência com Detector de Arranjo de Diodos (CLAE-DAD). Após a otimização dos parâmetros de extração e separação dos compostos, o método foi validado avaliando-se curva analítica, linearidade, limites de detecção e quantificação, precisão e exatidão (recuperação). O método apresentou recuperações médias de 87,9% e 96,9%, para a repetibilidade e precisão intermediária, respectivamente, com RSD de 0,8 a 20,7% para todos os compostos. O método será empregado na determinação de agrotóxicos em águas subterrâneas com um limite de quantificação de 0,2 µg L -1 .A method is described for the determination of the pesticides carbofuran, clomazone, 2,4-D and tebuconazole in groundwaters. The method involves solid phase extraction (SPE) with C18 cartridges and quantification by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). After the optimization of the extraction and separation parameters, the method was validated by evaluating the analytical curve, linearity, limits of detection and quantification, precision and accuracy (recovery). The method presents an average recovery of 87.9% and 96.9%, in repeatability and intermediate precision conditions, respectively, with adequate precision (RSD from 0.8 to 20.7%), for all compounds. The method will be applied to determine pesticides in groundwater samples with limit of quantification of 0.2 µg L -1 .
