Herbal/Natural Compounds Resist Hallmarks of Brain Aging: From Molecular Mechanisms to Therapeutic Strategies

Abstract: Aging is a complex process of impaired physiological integrity and function, and is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegeneration, and cancer. The cellular environment of the aging brain exhibits perturbed bioenergetics, impaired adaptive neuroplasticity and flexibility, abnormal neuronal network activity, dysregulated neuronal Ca2+ homeostasis, accumulation of oxidatively modified molecules and organelles, and clear signs of inflammation. These changes make the aging br… Show more

“…Plants that act as antiaging carry a lot of valuable active ingredients that may help reverse the aging process. Polyphenolic compounds represent an important class of phytoconstituents and they possess potent biological activities like antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties which play a role in delaying, preventing or treating aging-related diseases such as cancers, nephrosclerosis, arthritis, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases [ 13 ]. The main antiaging polyphenolics include quercetin, luteolin, catechins, curcumin, resveratrol and lignans.…”

“…CVD is known to cause neurodegeneration and mimic AD pathology. Various natural compounds, such as sinapic acid, auraptene, 4,60-anhydrooxysporidinone [ 6 ], rosmarinic acid [ 7 ], taurine [ 8 ], and epigallocatechin [ 9 ], are known to attenuate CVD and AD by improving BBB function and maintaining BBB integrity [ 9 , 10 ]. AST is a xanthophyll carotenoid, and is found in various microorganisms ( Paracoccus carotinifaciens ), microalgae ( Haematococcus species; genus of Chlorophycecae ), yeast ( Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous ), and marine animals, such as salmon (genus Oncorhynchus ; Salmo salar ), shrimp ( Penaeus semisulcatus ), krill ( Euphausia pacifica ), and crayfish [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ].…”
