Background Community pharmacists are in a key position to provide information on drugs and thus promote the rational use of drugs. Objectives The present study was designed to determine the needs and resources of drug information in community pharmacies. Methods A prospective institution based cross-sectional study was carried out and data were collected on 48 community pharmacists in Gondar, Northwest Ethiopia, using interviewer administered structured questionnaire. Results Almost all pharmacists (N = 47, 97.9%) often receive drug related queries and these were mainly from consumers (N = 41, 85.4%). While most questions relate to drug price (N = 29, 60.4%) and dosage (N = 21, 43.8%), the information resources mainly referred to were drug package inserts and national standard treatment guidelines. However, limited availability of information resources as well as limited ability to retrieve relevant information influenced the practice of pharmacists. Female pharmacists claimed better use of different information resources than males (P < 0.05). Conclusions Community pharmacists in Gondar, Northwest Ethiopia, are often accessed for drug related information. But there are limitations in using up to date and most reliable resources. Therefore, intervention aimed at improving pharmacists' access to and evaluation of drug information is urgently needed.

Conventional medicine is any agent that largely used by most healthcare professionals to treat any disease that infects humans and animals or to decrease the severity of any condition or diagnosis or prevention. 1 Herbal medicine considered to be the oldest form of healing and treating different diseases. The history of herbal medicine is part of the history of medicine itself and herbal knowledge came to Europe from the Middle East during the crusades. Herbal medicine is classified as 'complementary' or 'alternative' in most countries, it stills the only type of medicine that widely available to much of the world's population. Herbal medicines have been utilized in most traditional cultures and have had a vital impact on many systems, including Ayurvedic (Indian) medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and conventional medicine. There was a written record of Egyptian, Roman, Persian and Hebrew cultures reported that they were used herbs to cure every complaint and diseases. 2 Although herbal medicine is classed as 'alternative' or 'complementary' in most Western countries, it remains the only form of medicine widely available to much of the world's population. Most patients go to complementary medicines produced from a natural herbal source because they believe that they are safer, more effective and have fewer side effects than traditional synthetic medicine. Aims: To show the levels of awareness, attitude, practices and socioeconomic factors related to consuming herbal products among Alexandrian citizen visiting pharmacies. The findings of this study are meant also to show the practices and beliefs of healthcare providers regarding using herbal remedies in treatment, including advising patients, reporting adverse effects and possessing knowledge about specific herb-drug interactions. Study Design: people visiting pharmacies as well as pharmacists in their pharmacies and physicians in their clinics were invited to complete a questionnaire about their knowledge and personal experience in the consumption of herbal remedy. Anonymity was guaranteed. Questionnaire consists of three parts: demographic data, personal experience and a part concerning health care providers. Place and Duration of Study: Study area is the city of Alexandria, Egypt from the 1st July through September 2018. Methodology: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study that used a self-administered, questionnaire from 213 participants (153+ 60 health care providers HCPs). Results: Almost half the respondents preferred to be treated with herbs because they believed that herbs are safe. But they are not the proper choice to cure chronic diseases. Only 25% of herb users recorded suffering from side effects. The most common source of information about herbs was via internet, followed by family and friends, television and other types of media. Herbal remedies were purchased mainly from outlets other than pharmacies. The willingness to buy such products was not affected by participants’ education level or their monthly income. The public didn’t feel it’s important to mention any herbal remedy they consume to their physician; similarly HCPs did not ask them. Generally, it was shown that HCPs have inadequate knowledge about herbs. Conclusion: The prevalence of herb usage is moderate among the Alexandrian population. And it is imperative to educate HCPs about the benefits, risks and interactions of herbal supplements.
