Background Herbal medicine use is increasing and the global market is estimated to be US$107 billion by the year 2017. Objectives This study aimed at assessing community pharmacists' personal use, knowledge, attitude, dispensing practice, and the barriers regarding herbal medicines. Methods Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted among 47 community pharmacists in Gondar, Northwest Ethiopia, using a structured interviewing questionnaire. Results Nearly half of the respondents (n = 22, 46.8%) sometimes use herbal medicines. Although knowledge related to such preparations was self-rated as poor/acceptable (n = 34, 72.4%), majority (n = 44, 93.7%) of community pharmacists agree/strongly agree that herbal medicines have beneficial effects. Only 6 (12.7%) of them are sometimes/often engaged in dispensing herbal medicines and most of them (n = 34, 72.3%) rarely/never counseled clients regarding these preparations. Limited knowledge on and access to information regarding herbal medicines are the main barriers to the pharmacists' practice. Conclusion Although community pharmacists in Gondar, Northwest Ethiopia, commonly use and demonstrated good attitude towards herbal medicines, they are less involved in dispensing such products. They are also challenged with limited knowledge on and access to herbal medicine information. Thus, pharmacy educators, professional organizations, and the government shall pay more attention to solve the problem. Regulatory provisions on herbal medicine dispensing must be enacted and communicated very well.

Background: In this survey, it was aimed to determine the types of medicinal herbs and herbal products, reasons of use and consciousness levels among the medical students in the first three years of the School of Medicine.Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive questionnaire consisting of 50 questions was applied to all the students in the first three years of Dokuz Eylül University School of Medicine between September 1, 2016 and June 1, 2017.Results: The results of 571 participating students were evaluated. Of these students, 301 (52.7%) were females and 270 (47.3%) were males. It was found that 73.4% (n=419) of the students used these products for treatment and mostly consumed linden, sage tea, mint and rosehip. Also, 11.6% of the students had chronic diseases (n=66). It was determined that 69.7% (n=46) of these students having chronic diseases used medicinal herbs and herbal products. Only 12.0% of the students had an opinion about the legal regulations regarding the use of herbs and herbal products in Turkey, while 39.7% of them had no idea, and 48.3% stated that such regulations on this matter were unreasonable. However, 59.7% of the respondents stated that legal regulations were necessary. It was found that the participating students used herbs and herbal products generally for therapeutic purposes without having sufficient knowledge about medicinal herbs; therefore it was necessary to increase their level of consciousness.Conclusions: Medical students neither have adequate medical information about medicinal herbs and herbal products, nor about the regulations on these products. It is crucial to revise the courses in the medical education so that the students would get informed about the regulations as well as potential risks of herbal plants while still in the medical schools.

ÖzetGiriş ve Amaç: Çalışmamız, hiperlipidemi hastalarının tercih ettikleri ilaç ve bitkisel tedavi yöntemleri ile bu yöntemlere bakışlarının değerlendirilmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır. Yöntem ve Gereçler:Çalışmamıza, Aile Sağlığı Merkezi'ne başvuran ve hiperlipidemi tanısı almış 389 hasta dahil edildi. Bunlardan 192 (%49) hasta düzenli olarak ilaç tedavisi almakta, 197 (%51) hasta ilaç tedavisi yerine bitkisel tedavi kullanmakta idi. Hastalara, tedavi tercihlerini öğrenmek amacıyla hazırlanan ve demografik bilgiler de içeren anket uygulandı. Anketler 6 ay ara ile ölçülmüş LDL düzeyleri ile birlikte değerlendirildi. İstatistiksel analiz için SPSS 15.0 paket programı kullanıldı. Bulgular: İlaç dışı tedavi yöntemlerini sorguladığımızda, en sık tercih edilen yiyecek ceviz 42 (%21,3), ardından da 26 (%13,2) limon gelmekte idi. Hiperlipidemi süresi 0-1 yıl arasında olan bireylerin ilaç dışı yöntem kullanım oranı, daha uzun süreli hiperlipidemi tanısı olan bireylerden daha yüksek bulunmuştur (p<0,01). Diyet yapan bireylerde yapmayanlardan, 65 yaş üstü bireylerde 65 yaş altı bireylerden daha yüksek oranda düzenli ilaç kullanımı gözlendi (p<0,05). Altı ay ara ile ölçülmüş LDL kolesterol düzeylerindeki değişime baktığımızda en fazla düşüş ilaç kullanımında görüldü. Sonuç: Toplumda görülme sıklığı giderek artmasına rağmen dislipidemiyi yeteri kadar tedavi edemediğimiz açıktır. Bu durum hastaların kontrolsüzce bitkisel gıdalara yönelmelerine sebep olabilmektedir. Eksiklikleri gidermek adına hekimlerin başta olmak üzere hastaların da hiperlipidemi tedavisinin önemi hakkında bilgi düzeylerinin arttırılması gerekmektedir. AbstractIntroduction: Our study was made in order to evaluate the drug and herbal treatment methods preferred by hyperlipidemia patients and their views on these methods. Methods: In our study, 389 patients who admitted to the Family Health Centers and had hyperlipidemia diagnosis were included. Of these, 192 patients (49%) were regularly having medicine treatment and 197 patients (51%) were using herbal treatment instead of medicine treatment. A questionnaire also including demographical information prepared to learn about treatment preference of patients was applied. Questionnaires were evaluated with LDL levels measured in 6 month intervals. SPSS 15.0 software package was used for statistical analysis. Results: When we questioned non-medicine treatment methods, the most preferred food was walnut in 42 patients (21.3%) and then lemon in 26 patients (13.2%). Non-medicine method usage rate of individuals with a hyperlipidemia duration of 0-1 years was found higher than individuals with a longer period of hyperlipidemia diagnosis (p<0.01). A more regular medicine use was observed in individuals making diet than those who are not and individuals over 65 years of age than those who are under that age (p<0.05). When we examined the change in LDL cholesterol levels measured in 6 month intervals, the highest decrease was observed in medicine use.
