In this paper, hydroalcoholic solutions of Thymus vulgaris, Salvia officinalis folium, and Hyperici herba were used in combination with poly (vinyl alcohol) with the aim of developing novel poly (vinyl alcohol)-based nanofiber mats loaded with phytotherapeutic agents via the electrospinning technique. The chemical structure and morphology of the polymeric nanofibers were investigated using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The addition of Thymus vulgaris, Salvia officinalis folium, and Hyperici herba extracts to the pure polyvinyl alcohol fibers led to changes in the morphology of the fibers and a reduction in the fibers’ diameter, from 0.1798 µm in the case of pure polyvinyl alcohol to 0.1672, 0.1425, and 0.1369 µm in the case of polyvinyl alcohol loaded with Thymus vulgaris, Salvia officinalis folium, and Hyperici herba, respectively. The adapted Folin–Ciocalteu (FC) method, which was used to determine the total phenolic contents, revealed that the samples of PVA–Hyperici herba and PVA–Thymus vulgaris had the highest phenol contents, at 13.25 μgGAE/mL and 12.66 μgGAE/mL, respectively. Dynamic water vapor measurements were used in order to investigate the moisture sorption and desorption behavior of the developed electrospun materials. The antimicrobial behavior of these products was also evaluated. Disk diffusion assay studies with Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus were conducted on the developed nanofibers in order to quantify their phytotherapeutic potential.

The discipline ‘urban ethnopharmacology’ emerged as a collection of traditional knowledge, ancient civilizations, history and folklore being circulated since generations, usage of botanical products, palaeobotany and agronomy. Non-traditional botanical knowledge increases the availability of healthcare and other essential products to the underprivileged masses. Intercultural medicine essentially involves ‘practices in healthcare that bridge indigenous medicine and western medicine, where both are considered as complementary’. A unique aspect of urban ethnopharmacology is its pluricultural character. Plant medicine blossomed due to intercultural interactions and has its roots in major anthropological events of the past. Unani medicine was developed by Khalif Harun Al Rashid and Khalif Al Mansur by translating Greek and Sanskrit works. Similarly, Indo-Aryan migration led to the development of Vedic culture, which product is Ayurveda. Greek medicine reached its summit when it travelled to Egypt. In the past few decades, ethnobotanical field studies proliferated, especially in the developed countries to cope with the increasing demands of population expansion. At the same time, sacred groves continued to be an important method of conservation across several cultures even in the urban aspect. Lack of scientific research, validating the efficiency, messy applications, biopiracy and slower results are the main constrains to limit its acceptability. Access to resources and benefit sharing may be considered as a potential solution. Indigenous communities can copyright their traditional formulations and then can collaborate with companies, who have to provide the original inventors with a fair share of the profits since a significant portion of the health economy is generated by herbal medicine. Search string included the terms ‘Urban’ + ‘Ethnopharmacology’, which was searched in Google Scholar to retrieve the relevant literature. The present review aims to critically analyse the global concept of urban ethnopharmacology with the inherent plurality of the cross-cultural adaptations of medicinal plant use by urban people across the world.

Sistemas complexos podem se organizar de forma direcionada para a criatividade e autenticidade, uma característica chamada de autotranscendência. Neste artigo, a sala de aula criativa é vista como um sistema complexo que busca a autotranscendência, uma característica de cunho transdisciplinar. Nosso objetivo foi saber se o nosso grupo de pesquisa sobre criatividade desenvolvia essas competências — criatividade e autotranscendência — nos alunos através de práticas que envolviam Mindfulness e o método Artsci. Nossa metodologia foi dividida em duas análises qualitativas. A primeira foi o processo simbólico-arquetípico sobre a última prática do semestre. A segunda análise foi a de conteúdo de Bardin, sobre a melhora da criatividade e outros benefícios das práticas do grupo de pesquisa. Nos resultados da primeira análise encontramos símbolos e arquétipos que remetiam ao aspecto de segurança necessário para o alcance da autonomia e realização pessoal dos estudantes. Na segunda análise encontramos que as práticas criativas foram importantes para o desenvolvimento da criatividade, autoconhecimento, autoestima, autorreflexão e bem-estar. Esses resultados indicam que as competências de criatividade e autotranscendência foram desenvolvidas. Acreditamos que esse modelo contribui para o desenvolvimento de escolas criativas que promovam não só a criatividade, mas a consciência integral do ser humano.
