Hepatoprotective effects of Justicia adhatoda L. against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver injury in Swiss albino mice

Abstract: Medicinal plants are believed to be a precious natural reservoir and have been continuously studied for their pharmacological activities against various ailments, liver being no exception. Leaves of Justicia adhatoda L. are being extensively used against many human ailments. Hepatoprotective effects of J. adhatoda L. leaves and flowers were investigated on carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) induced liver damage in Swiss albino mice. Liver injury was assessed by estimation of biochemical parameters which includes li… Show more

“…It elevates the liver marker enzymes which were reduced due to the injury in the liver (78). The same results were also reproduced by another research by using whole plant powder drug, these records for its hepatoprotective activity and various liver disorders (79). The aqueous extract of leaves shows significant hepatoprotective activity induced by d-galactosamine in rats at a dose less than 100 mg/kg per oral (24).…”

“…Drug made from the plant is known in Unani medicine as 'Munaffis-e-balgham', meaning expectorant and good for treating cold, cough, asthma, and chronic bronchitis [56] . The hepatoprotective effect of leaves and flowers of the plant has been demonstrated in Swiss albino mice with CCl 4 -induced liver injury [57] . Significant reduction of blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin have been reported with methanolic extract of leaves in Balb-C albino diabetic mice.…”
