Hyperlipidemia and inflammation contribute to the development of atherosclerotic lesions. Our objective was to determine antiatherogenic effect of edible blue-green algae (BGA) species, that is, Nostoc commune var. sphaeroides Kützing (NO) and Spirulina platensis (SP), in apolipoprotein E knockout (ApoE(-/-)) mice, a well-established mouse model of atherosclerosis. Male ApoE(-/-) mice were fed a high-fat/high-cholesterol (HF/HC, 15% fat and 0.2% cholesterol by wt) control diet or a HF/HC diet supplemented with 5% (w/w) of NO or SP powder for 12 weeks. Plasma total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG) were measured, and livers were analyzed for histology and gene expression. Morphometric analysis for lesions and immunohistochemical analysis for CD68 were conducted in the aorta and the aortic root. NO supplementation significantly decreased plasma TC and TG, and liver TC, compared to control and SP groups. In the livers of NO-fed mice, less lipid droplets were present with a concomitant decrease in fatty acid synthase protein levels than the other groups. There was a significant increase in hepatic low-density lipoprotein receptor protein levels in SP-supplemented mice than in control and NO groups. Quantification of aortic lesions by en face analysis demonstrated that both NO and SP decreased aortic lesion development to a similar degree compared with control. While lesions in the aortic root were not significantly different between groups, the CD68-stained area in the aortic root was significantly lowered in BGA-fed mice than controls. In conclusion, both NO and SP supplementation decreased the development of atherosclerotic lesions, suggesting that they may be used as a natural product for atheroprotection.

A B S T R A C T Doxorubicin (DOX ) is an anthracycline derivative antibiotic, used as anticancer agent, it causes generation of free radicals and induces oxidative stress, associated with cellular injury and participate in hepatonephrotoxicity in normal human cells .The protective effect of Spirulina Platensis (SP) , a filamentous blue green algae , on Doxorubicin induced oxidative stress and hepatotoxicity was evaluated in male rats. Oral administration of water extract of Spirulina (1000 mg/kg/b.wt) for six weeks following an acute toxic dose of Doxorubicin ( 1.0 mg/kg/b.wt) , reduces the hepatotoxicity and attenuates doxorubicin-induced stress .The post-treatment with Spirulina reduces the activity of Liver marker enzymes such as serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and Renal function disorders represented by urea. The ratio of decrease were lower in the first three weeks if compared with the last three weeks. On the other hand, Oral administration of Spirulina extract for six weeks following an acute toxic dose of Doxorubicin, led to an obvious increase in the activity of antioxidant Parameters including Catalase ( CAT ) and Super Oxide Dismutase ( SOD ). The results clearly demonstrate that Spirulina treatment augments the antioxidants defense mechanism in Dox induced toxicity and provides evidence that it may have a therapeutic role in free radical mediated diseases.

The simultaneous production of carbonic anhydrase and the phycobiliproteins, C-phycocyanin and allophycocyanin, was evaluated during the cultivation of Spirulina platensis using Zarrouk's medium in its non-diluted (100 % ZM) and diluted to 20 % (v/v) (20 % ZM) forms. In both media, Spirulina simultaneously produced carbonic anhydrase and phycobiliproteins. For the phycobiliproteins' production, higher concentrations (mg/g) of C-phycocyanin and allophycocyanin were obtained when 100 % ZM was used. For carbonic anhydrase production, higher concentrations (U/g) were obtained on the 6 th day of cultivation in both culture media. 100 % ZM promoted greater productions of these bioproducts, and, for simultaneous obtainment, the cells should be harvested after 21 days, obtaining concentrations of 137.4 mg/g C-phycocyanin, 104.4 mg/g allophycocyanin, and 26.6 U/g carbonic anhydrase.
