Hepatocellular carcinoma with pharyngeal metastasis: Report of a case

Abstract: We report a case of pharyngeal metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Any oral cavity involvement of HCC, especially pharyngeal metastasis, is extremely rare. The resected specimen contained a pedunculated polypoid lesion and histological examination revealed an epithelial tumor with a trabecular growth pattern, covered with intact squamous mucosa. Immunohistochemical studies were positive for hepatocyte-specific antigen and alpha-fetoprotein. At the time of writing, the patient, a 73-year-old man, was … Show more

“…However, the rate of initial recurrence in multiple sites was reported to be about 40% (2,9,13) when systemic recurrence is promoted by circulating tumor cells; solitary recurrence is very rare, except at those sites. There are seven published cases of pharyngeal metastasis from HCC (14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20), which are summarized along with our case in Table 1. The reports all describe male patients with a median age of 70 years (range> 49-71 years).…”

“…Other metastatic sites were the adrenal gland, peritoneum, skin, brain, muscle, and pharynx. 23,24,27 The incidence of metastasis of HCC to the gallbladder is 2.7%-6.4% in autopsy series. 28,29 However, resected cases with metastasis of HCC to the gallbladder are even rarer.…”
