Hepatitis E virus infection in swine workers: A meta‐analysis

Abstract: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infects both humans and animals. Swine has been confirmed to be the principal natural reservoir, which raises a concern that HEV infection would be substantially increasing among swine workers. The present study calculated the pooled prevalence of IgG antibodies against HEV among swine workers and the general population in previous cross‐sectional studies. We conducted a meta‐analysis comparing the prevalence of HEV infection between swine workers and the general population, including l… Show more

“…Rats and pigs can easily be exposed to each other faeces, where a high level of the virus could be released. Faeces could contaminate environment representing a source of contamination for pigs but also for pig workers although the detection of RNA is not sufficient to state that the virus is infectious (Mughini‐Gras et al, 2017; Huang, Huang, Wagner, Chen, & Lu, ). Since rats and mice are synanthropic and can have a role on human infections, as reported by the detection of rat HEV strains in patients affected by acute hepatitis (Sridhar et al, ; Andonov et al, ), further investigation is required.…”

“…Swedish strains from most human cases with acute HEV and HEV from pigs and wild boar belong to subtype 3f in clade 3II (Norder et al, 2009;Roth et al, 2016). Zoonotic transmission of HEV by direct or indirect contact with infected animals, as pigs, may therefore be a further factor (Huang, Huang, Wagner, Chen, & Lu, 2018;Krumbholz et al, 2012Krumbholz et al, , 2014Sommerkorn, Schauer, Schreiner, Fickenscher, & Krumbholz, 2017) contributing to the surprisingly high seroprevalence in Sweden.…”
