Hepatitis Delta Virus: A Peculiar Virus

Abstract: The hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is distributed worldwide and related to the most severe form of viral hepatitis. HDV is a satellite RNA virus dependent on hepatitis B surface antigens to assemble its envelope and thus form new virions and propagate infection. HDV has a small 1.7 Kb genome making it the smallest known human virus. This deceivingly simple virus has unique biological features and many aspects of its life cycle remain elusive. The present review endeavors to gather the available information on HDV… Show more

“…Interestingly, thus far, only one naturally occurring circRNA is known to encode a single protein in eukaryotic cells, i.e., HDV, which is a subviral satellite virus of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) [5]. The encapsulation of HDV with HBV virions results in the production of a single viral protein that is specific to pathogenicity, but the principle of translation is noncanonical and probably associated with specific viral agents [55,56]. However, to date, there is no evidence that suggests that naturally occurring endogenous circRNAs undergo translation [10,12].…”

“…The hepatitis delta virus (HDV) also has a circular ssRNA genome. It encodes a single protein, and is a subviral satellite of hepatitis B virus (HBV) that gets encapsulated within HBV virions and thereby coinfects with HBV (Flores et al 2011;Abbas and Afzal 2013;Alves et al 2013).…”

“…1,2 It is a small, satellite, singlestranded RNA virus that requires the surface antigen of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) for assembly and transmission 3,4 and is associated with faster progression to cirrhosis, hepatic decompensation, hepatocellular carcinoma and death than HBV mono-infection. [5][6][7] Transmission of HDV in endemic areas is purportedly through horizontal intra-familial spread, although sexual transmission, 6 injecting drug use (IDU) and unsafe medical and dental practices are also risk factors. 8,9 Prevalence is not evenly distributed, with a higher burden of infection occurring in Mediterranean Europe, the Amazon Basin, Sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia.…”
