Hepatitis C virus genotypes in a northeastern area of Brazil.

Abstract: Abstract. We used a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to obtain the genotypes of circulating hepatitis C virus (HCV) in patients from a Gastro-Hepatology Unit in the city of Salvador (Bahia State) in northeastern Brazil. Viral RNA was detected in 83 (65.4%) of 127 anti-HCV seropositive serum samples. Positivity was significantly associated with alterations in levels of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase (P Ͻ 0.05). Genotyping of HCV was performed by RT-PCR using geno… Show more

“…e HCV-RNA percentage in HCV antibody-positive patients in our community was 61.1% (124/203). Similar disparities in ratio between HCV antibody-positive and HCV-RNA viral load detectable plasma levels have been reported by others (10,11).…”

“…In our study, the HCV-RNA frequency in plasma samples from anti-HCV-positive patients (82.5%) was similar to that reported in other studies in Brazil [42,44]. The predominance of genotype 1 (68.75% of all HCV-RNA positive cases) also concurs with published data from other studies conducted in Brazil [42,[44][45][46].…”

“…Among the Northeastern states, published data are available only for Rio Grande do Norte (21), Ceará (23), and Bahia (27). We analyzed a small number of samples from these states and obtained comparable results.…”
