Hepatitis C virus and lichen planus in Nigerians: any relationship?

Abstract: The prevalence of anti-HCV amongst Nigerian with lichen planus is lower than amongst patients with other dermatoses not associated with HCV but higher than amongst apparently normal control. It would appear that the prevalence of HCV is high in Nigeria and not necessarily in lichen planus as a specific entity.

“…Recently, a more widespread and chronic viral disease, hepatitis C (HCV), has been implicated in triggering LP. While some studies of selected populations with LP have confirmed a significant association with HCV [3,6-9], other investigations have failed to document this finding [10-14]. This study was conducted to determine the frequency of hepatitis C in patients with LP at Razi hospital, in Tehran, Iran.…”

“…17 In some areas of minimal HCV endemicity, such as the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia, Nepal, and Nigeria, patients with OLP have rates of HCV infection near 0. [18][19][20][21][22][23] No cases of HCV infection or liver abnormality were found in the United States. 24 Another way to look at this problem is to investigate the occurrence of OLP in anti-HCV-positive individuals, but few studies started with this population and, in most of these, 25-28 the prevalence of HCV infection did not seem to influence the rate of association with OLP, but eventual coinfection of HIV was never considered.…”

“…31 No presente estudo, não foi encontrada diferença quantitativa desta associação com o Líquen Plano, o que sugere que esta variável não foi relevante na metanálise. Em relação a idade, segundo Campisi et al, 20 a prevalência de LP é maior nos pacientes com idade acima de 60 anos, em relação aos pacientes na faixa etária entre 30 -39, do mesmo modo que a infeção pelo HCV é crescente na escala de idade.…”
