Hepatitis B virus reactivation after treatment for hepatitis C in hemodialysis patients with HBV/HCV coinfection

Abstract: In coinfected HBV/HCV patients, HBV replication is usually suppressed by HCV over the time. No study to date has evaluated the HBV viremia in long-term follow-up after HCV treatment in hemodialysis patients with HBV/HCV coinfection. This study aimed to assess the evolution of HBV viremia after HCV treatment in this special population. Ten hemodialysis patients with HBV/HCV coinfection with dominant HCV infection (HBV lower than 2000 IU/mL) and significant fibrosis were treated with interferon-alpha 3 MU 3×/wee… Show more

“…The risk of late HBV reactivation had already been demonstrated in a small study by Wahle et al of a cohort of 10 HCV/HBV coinfected patients from a hemodialysis center. The study showed that after HCV treatment with pegylated-interferon and ribavirin, most HBV reactivations occurred at a late stage (mean time, 22 ± 9 months) [23].…”

“…Between 2 and 10% of anti-HCV-positive patients also test positive for HBsAg, while 5-20% of patients with chronic HBV infection test positive for anti-HCV antibodies [68]. It has been reported that HBV/HCV coinfection leads to more severe liver disease and a higher prevalence of liver cancer than noninfection [69], but an inverse relationship between the replication of each virus within some co-infected patients has been noted [70][71][72][73][74]. Hepatitis B virus-Hepatitis C virus co-infection Table 2.…”

“…Wahle et al evaluated the HBV reactivation after HCV treatment in 10 hemodialysis patients with HBV/HCV coinfection (HBV DNA lower than 2,000 IU/mL) treated with interferon-alpha and followed them up at least 36 months after HCV treatment (16). HBV reactivation during followup was observed in 6/10 patients including 5/6 patients with SVR.…”
