Hepatitis B Immunisation in Health Care Workers

Abstract: Due to low and delayed HBV vaccine-compliance, HCW continue to be at the risk of occupational HBV. Health education highlighting occupational risk of HBV, accessibility of vaccine and mandatory vaccination of HCW is recommended to increase HBV vaccine compliance among HCW.

“…In line with this Chaudhari et al reported that absence during vaccine drive due to leave or temporary duty was one of the most common reasons for not completing primary immunization in partially vaccinated health care workers [28]. In the current study about one-fourth (25.9%) of partially vaccinated health professionals were on waiting for the next dose.…”

“…Significantly higher vaccination coverage was found for medical doctors, pharmacists, first degree holders, master degree holders, and unmarried health professionals than their equivalents in the group. The presence of significant association between type of profession and vaccination status is also reported by so many studies [12, 13, 25, 28, 29]. The study done by Kathy et al reported that more than high school education has significantly higher vaccination coverage [14].…”

“…[16] We found in our study that 80 percent of HCWs who were previously vaccinated had protective titers while only 41 % of the unvaccinated subjects had anti HBs titers above 10 miu/ml. similar results were seen in some other studies from India [11,17]. This inding reiterates the fact that most of the healthcare workers are still unaware or ignorant about hepatitis B vaccination and are prone for the infection through blood and other body luid exposure.…”

“…As a part of occupational safety measures, all HCWs are recommended to a compulsory vaccination against HBV [10]. However, as per the estimates by WHO, only 18% of HCW of South East Asia including India are vaccinated [11,12] due to poor awareness in this group. The HBV vaccines has been demonstrated to be very effective in clinical trials involving several groups which showed complete protection in persons with anti-HBs concentration of more than 10 miu/ml following vaccination [13,14].…”

“…As concerns HBV vaccination, we can say that it needs to be implemented in countries where the incidence, as well as the probability of being infected if exposed, is high [27]. In Italy this vaccination has been mandatory for newborns since 1991, while it is recommended for HCWs.…”
