Hepatitis B and C virus prevalence in couples attending an in vitro fertilization clinic in a tertiary care hospital in Saudi Arabia: comparison with ten years earlier

Abstract: BACKGROUNDViral hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) are a major public health problem in Saudi Arabia. Recent data has indicated a major reduction in viral hepatitis prevalence in Saudi population. However, there is limited data for infertile Saudi couples.OBJECTIVESTo determine the prevalence of HCV and HBV attending an in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinic in Saudi Arabia between 2012 and 2015 to compare with the prevalence 10 years earlier in the same center.DESIGNRetrospective prevalence study.SETTINGTertiary care… Show more

“…Some studies that similarly screened for Hep B (within moderate and high prevalence regions) among pregnant women and their partners, couples who planned to conceive after marriage, and couples who attend a fertility clinic in a tertiary hospital also showed a higher prevalence in men than women (4.6% against 6.8%; 4.4% against 6.3%; and 3.1% against 6.3%, respectively) [32, 46, 47]. By screening and treating couples infected with Hep B, we can more effectively reduce both vertical and horizontal transmission.…”

“…HCV seropositivity was equal in females and males. It has been observed in many studies thatHBV infection affects males more than females 12,13,16,25 . There is no clear explanation for this gender variation.…”

“…The difference is probably related to the conservative society with less female exposure outside the family, but may also be due to opposite effects of sex hormones. In several experimental animal models, viral transcription is stimulated by androgen, while estrogen suppresses HBV transcription 25 . The association of risk factors with HBV and HCV has been a variable in different studies.…”

“…In addition, the prevalence of HCV infection is different in different populations. For example, the prevalence of HCV infection in premarital screening population was 0.3%, 14 while that of intravenous drug user population was ranging from 22% to 95% 15 . Therefore, this study set the different prevalence of HCV infection in the population (0.5%, 1% and 10%, respectively), and combined with clinical sensitivity and specificity to calculate PPV and NPV.…”
