“…In this report we observed the co-circulation of subgenotypes IA and IB. In previous studies both genotypes have been detected in samples collected in Rio de Janeiro (15,27), confirming that both genotypes are present in this region. Similarly, in an outbreak in Spain, genotypes IA and IB were found in clinical samples at a proportion of 50% each.…”

“…18 However, these results are higher than those observed in patients with HCV infection (mean age of 44.8 years), in the city of Rio de Janeiro (86%), leading authors of this other study to recommend implementation of hepatitis A vaccination for this population. 19 Thus, despite the observed changes in the HA epidemiology from high to intermediate endemicity in the Southeastern Brazil, the high seroprevalence of anti-HAV antibodies in adult patients with LC observed in the present study shows that routine HA vaccination could not be implemented for this patients. In addition, the serological test for total anti-HAV detection by ELISA method is five times cheaper than complete vaccination against hepatitis A [R$ 35.00 (US$ 19.4) versus R$ 180.00 (US$ 100), respectively], and, for these reasons, the screening for HAV antibody before vaccination could be recommended for adult patients with chronic liver disease due to its higher cost-effectiveness.…”

“…This demonstrates that a genotype I infection has an endemic character in Brazil, although it is the only South American country in which the circulation of both subgenotypes IA and IB has been reported (de Paula et al 2002, Devalle et al 2003, Villar et al 2004. However, this study differs from that of de , in which the analysis of the nucleotide sequence of the VP1/2A junction region showed the occurrence of only subgenotype IA in isolates from the state of Goiás.…”

“…In Brazil, the only genotype that has been found is genotype I, especially subgenotype IA ). However, subgenotype IB has also been observed to circulate in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Pernambuco and in the Amazon region (de Paula et al 2002, Devalle et al 2003, Villar et al 2004.…”
