Hepatic Dysfunction in Renal Carcinoma

Abstract: In a retrospective review of 81 patients with renal carcinoma 34 (42%) had abnormalities of one or more liver function tests. Fifteen patients (18.5%) had abnormalities of 3 or more liver function tests but without evidence of hepatic metastases. There was a significant association between these patients and the presence of fever, anaemia, weight loss and a raised ESR (P less than 0.001) compared with those whose liver function was normal. Following nephrectomy, liver function returned to normal in 5 patients.… Show more

“…Data on the outcome, prognosis, and significance of Stauffer's syndrome is limited. Previous anecdotal reports suggested that RCC patients with hepatic dysfunction had significantly worse prognosis than those without hepatic dysfunction [2,15] . It has also been suggested that the occurrence of Stauffer's syndrome may be an early indicator of recurrence after surgical resection or tumor metastases [15,16] .…”

“…Paraneoplastic endocri nopathies [3,4] associated with renal cell carcinoma have also been described previously, which include inap propriate or ectopic secretion of parathormone [ Comparing groups of stages 1,2,3 and 4 with each other by one-way Anova (p < 0.005), the higher the stage, the larger the decrease in serum iron, hemoglobin, hematocrit and MCV. Comparing the groups of different stages of renal cell carcinoma with the control group by Student's t test (p < 0.05), a significant decrease in serum iron, hemoglobin, hematocrit and MCV in patients with renal cell carcinoma was found.…”
