Hepatectomy for rapidly growing solitary liver metastasis from non-small cell lung cancer: a case report

Abstract: Background Patients with liver metastasis from non-small lung cancer (NSCLC) usually have multiple metastases at other sites and thus rarely undergo liver surgery. We present a case involving successful resection of rapidly growing liver metastasis from squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. Case presentation A 74-year-old man had undergone left lower lobectomy for squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, which was diagnosed pathologically as stage IA. A computed tomography (… Show more

“…24 Nagashima et al and Hakoda et al also found that resection of liver metastases from NSCLC may offer the possibility of long-term survival. 25,26 Thus, the results of our study may be useful in making practical and informed clinical decisions, such as a more precise assessment of the prognosis of patients with metastasized PC tumors.…”

“…Hakoda et al [ 114 ] reported that hepatectomy of a solitary LM from NSCLC was the preferred management for a 74-year-old man with a stable condition. In a retrospective study conducted on 2038 patients who underwent NSCLC resection between January 1997 and December 2015, hepatectomy was as effective as a multimodal treatment for an oligometastatic hepatic recurrence of NSCLC.…”

“…Lung cancer can be divided into two categories: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer, and NSCLC account for approximately 85% of lung cancer cases, due to clinical manifestations and signs are not obvious, and about 40%-55% of these patients are advanced at the time of diagnosis 2 . The common sites of metastasis in advanced NSCLC are bone, brain, adrenal gland, and liver 3 . For advanced patients presenting with metastases, their median survival is 8–12 months, while in patients with metastases at common sites, the median Overall survival(OS) is only 3 months once liver metastases are diagnosed 4 , 5 .…”
