Heparin beyond anti-coagulation

Abstract: Heparin has served as a mainstream anticoagulant for over eight decades. Clinically heparin-derived compounds significantly contribute to prevention and treatment of thrombotic events complicated in numerous medical conditions such as venous thromboembolism, coronary artery disease and extracorporeal circulation processes. Moreover in recent years, various off-labeled efficacious potentials of heparin beyond anti-coagulation are dramatically emerging, and increasingly investigated in clinical studies. Herein t… Show more

“…Heparin‐derived compounds significantly contribute to the prevention and treatment of thrombotic events in pregnancy, respiratory inflammation, renal diseases, sepsis, and pancreatitis, among others. 21 Low‐molecular‐weight heparin also has a positive effect on thrombophilia IVF patients, 22 because it decreases coagulation in small blood vessels and increases trophoblast development. 23 This is in accordance with what we found, that treated thrombophilia patients had the same outcomes as normal patients.…”

“…For example, Heparin has served as a mainstream anticoagulant for nearly a century, and is used to prevent or to treat thrombotic events in various fields including coagulating complications in the patients with COVID-19 [ 19 ] . Recently, a RWD-based retrospective study found that low molecular weight heparin played an additive role in anti-inflammation by attenuating the cytokine storm upon associated with IL-6 down-regulation [ 20 ] .…”

“…When it occurs as hypercoagulation in pregnancy, VTE can lead to higher maternal morbidity. Heparin is safer than other anticoagulants when used during pregnancy [ 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 ]. Due to their animal origin and biosynthesis, GAGs have highly variable chain and sulfation patterns, which ultimately prevent the perfect purification of UFH.…”
