Scales, sets of discrete pitches that form the basis of melodies, are thought to be one of the most universal hallmarks of music. But we know relatively little about cross-cultural diversity of scales or how they evolved. To remedy this, we assemble a cross-cultural database (Database of Musical Scales: DaMuSc) of scale data, collected over the past century by various ethnomusicologists. Statistical analyses of the data highlight that certain intervals (e.g., the octave, fifth, second) are used frequently across cultures. Despite some diversity among scales, it is the similarities across societies which are most striking: step intervals are restricted to 100-400 cents; most scales are found close to equidistant 5- and 7-note scales. We discuss potential mechanisms of variation and selection in the evolution of scales, and how the assembled data may be used to examine the root causes of convergent evolution.

Scales, sets of discrete pitches used to generate melodies, are thought to be one of the most universal features of music. Despite this, we know relatively little about how cross-cultural diversity, or how scales have evolved. We remedy this, in part, we assemble a cross-cultural database of empirical scale data, collected over the past century by various ethnomusicologists. We provide statistical analyses to highlight that certain intervals (e.g., the octave) are used frequently across cultures. Despite some diversity among scales, it is the similarities across societies which are most striking. Most scales are found close to equidistant 5- and 7-note scales; for 7-note scales this accounts for less than 1% of all possible scales. In addition to providing these data and statistical analyses, we review how they may be used to explore the causes for convergent evolution in scales.

Europäische Musik wurde im 19. Jahrhundert in den arabischen Ländern zum Symbol für Fortschritt und das Besitzen, Lernen und Spielen von europäischen Musikinstrumenten zu einem Statussymbol, das die Zugehörigkeit zu einer höheren gesellschaftlichen Schicht ausdrückte. Im Zuge der umfangreichen Staatsreformen und Modernisierungsprogramme-insbesondere in Ägyptenwurden ab 1820 Militärkapellen und-musikschulen nach europäischem Vorbild gegründet. Somit drang die europäische Musik auch in die ärmeren Bevölkerungsschichten ein. Mit der Gründung zahlreicher Missionsschulen in Syrien und Ägypten und der zunehmenden Aktivität europäischer wie amerikanischer Missionare, für die Musik ein wichtiges Mittel darstellte, das Evangelium zu verkündigen, wurden viele christliche wie nicht-christliche Araber aus einfachen Verhältnissen weiteren Formen westlicher Musik ausgesetzt. Für die Unterweisung in der westlichen Musik waren somit arabischsprachige Schriften zur westlichen Musiktheorie unentbehrlich (Taʿlīmcibaşı; Edwin Lewis; Rizqallāh Šiḥāta; Don Angelo Bormida; Aḥmad Amīn ad-Dīk). Der vorliegende Aufsatz widmet sich zuerst diesen Schriften und zielt darauf, ihre Entstehungsbedingungen und ihren Inhalt zum ersten Mal systematisch darzulegen. Daraufhin wird dem parallel dazu zu beobachtenden Einfluss westlicher Musiktheorie auf die Theorien arabischer Musik nachgegangen (Mīḫāʾīl Mušāqa/Louis Ronzevalle; Ibrāhīm Beg Muṣṭafā; Muḥammad Ḏākir Beg). Der Text liefert damit umfangreiches Material für eine Erforschung der Geschichte der Verbreitung, Rezeption und Aneignung westlicher Musiktheorie in den arabischen Ländern. 1 Vgl. Shawan 1985, 144f. 2 Welche westlichen musiktheoretischen Werke arabischen Lesern*innen zugänglich waren oder arabischen Autoren zur Abfassung ihrer eigenen musiktheoretischen Werke vorlagen, kann man in den seltensten Fällen und nur anhand von sporadischen Hinweisen in der Literatur erfahren. 3 Die Umschrift des Arabischen erfolgt anhand der Regeln der Deutschen Morgenländischen Gesellschaft (DMG) und die des Türkisch-Osmanischen anhand der Regeln der İslam Ansiklopedisi. In Lehn-und Fremdwörtern in arabischer Schrift, in Wörtern aus dem Persischen sowie für mundartliche Transkriptionen wird der Buchstabe ‫چ‬ als č, der Buchstabe ‫ج‬ als g oder ž, ‫ك‬ als g, ‫پ‬ als p, ‫و‬ als o, ō und v und schließlich ‫ي‬ als e oder ē transliteriert. Personennamen in arabischer Schrift werden in der Regel transliteriert. In lateinischer Schrift geschriebene Namen arabischer Personen (vor allem Autoren) bleiben hingegen unverändert (also ›Bayoumi‹ und nicht ›Baiyūmī‹; ›Moustapha‹ und nicht ›Muṣṭafā‹). Wenn nicht anders angegeben, stammen alle Übersetzungen vom Autor des vorliegenden Aufsatzes.
