Hemp Dogbane Growth and Control

Abstract: Hemp dogbane (Apocynum cannabinum L.) was investigated relative to seed germination, depth of seedling emergence, response to clipping, influence of soil type and fertility on vegetative growth, and herbicidal control. Seed germination in this study was influenced by light and scarification. Seedling emergence was influenced by the amount of soil cover. Soil type and fertility affected vegetative growth. In a greenhouse clipping study, hemp dogbane became perennial 41 days after emergence and by 65 days was pr… Show more

“…Lateral roots spread from just below the crown of hemp dogbane and buds on lateral roots develop into new plants the following spring to form dense, circular patches that can reduce crop yields (Schultz and Burnside 1979a;Triplett 1985). Crown buds are the primary source of vegetative regrowth following disturbance of the shoots, and like lateral roots, crown buds can overwinter (Becker and Fawcett 1998;Robison and Jeffery 1972). To adequately control hemp dogbane, the vegetative buds in the crown and lateral roots must be destroyed or new shoots will develop.…”

“…The species can be found throughout much of the United States and southern Canada (5, 6). Hemp dogbane reproduces from seed, basal crown buds, and budding roots (6,24,26). Roots are usually found 15 cm below the soil surface or deeper and grow in a lateral direction away from the parent plant.…”

“…Herbicide applications in September provide better control than those applied in June wfiile treatments applied 16 June, 21 September, and 4 October resulted in 0 to 61%. 85%, and 52% control of hemp dogbane, respectively (13,14,21).…”
