Hemorrhagic Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome

Abstract: Background and Purpose-To compare hemorrhagic and nonhemorrhagic reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndromes (RCVS) with a view to understand mechanisms. Methods-This single-center retrospective study included 162 patients with RCVS. Clinical, brain imaging, and angiography data were analyzed. Results-The mean age was 44±13 years, 78% women. Hemorrhages occurred in 43% including 21 patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and 62 with convexal subarachnoid hemorrhage (cSAH). The frequency of triggers (eg… Show more

“…1,5,44,45 There was a very low rate of hemorrhage in the Taiwanese cohort, whereas studies of Western populations reported higher rates of hemorrhagic complications. 5,8,44,45 In our study subjects, the rate of hemorrhagic complications was as low as about 5%. These findings may be attributed from different ethnicities (Asians vs Caucasians and/or Hispanics), different rates of illicit drug usage, or the route of recruitment (headache clinic based vs stroke center and/or inpatient referral).…”

“…Over the last decade, the clinical and imaging features of reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) have been extensively characterized [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] and distinguished from its historic mimic, primary angiitis of the CNS (PACNS). [7][8][9] Patients with RCVS invariably present with recurrent severe thunderclap headaches.…”
