In this study, we explored the effects of flash intensity and age on visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) in a sample of 85 children aged 8-15 years. Results of previous studies are discrepant regarding the extent to which children show an evoked potential augmenting tendency at vertex, which has been reported to be a characteristic of an immature inhibitory control system. In the present study, VEPs to light flashes of four different intensities were recorded at Cz. The results confirmed that P1N1 and N1P2 at Cz were positively related to increases in stimulus intensity, whereas N1 was not related reliably to intensity. This difference between peak-peak and baseline-peak amplitude findings at Cz relative to evoked potential augmenting and reducing may help to explain discrepant results among earlier studies. Developmental changes were found for our sample of children that were independent of stimulus intensity: N1 amplitude increased significantly with age, whereas N1 latency showed a small (nonsignificant) age-related decrease.

To investigate the impact of several methodological variations in the assessment of augmenting/reducing, auditory evoked potentials to 1000 Hz tones with varying stimulus intensity (59, 71, 79, 88, 92, 96 dB (SPL)) were recorded at 19 EEG sites in 24 participants during two separate recording sessions. The internal consistency analysis revealed only weak correlations for linear regression slopes based on high intensity levels when compared to slopes based on low intensity levels. For base-to-peak and peak-to-peak ERP component measurements, acceptable internal consistency and temporal stability were confirmed for the N1/P2-based slope, and partly for the P2 slope, whereas P1, N1, and P1/N1 slopes were not reliable. After submitting auditory evoked potentials to a covariance-based principal component analysis (PCA), followed by unscaled varimax rotation, temporal stability of slope measures for the corresponding factor scores substantially increased. The findings suggest that at least five to six intensity-levels are required over a relatively broad range to yield a reliable measure of auditory evoked augmenting/reducing. If measured reliably, P2 slopes may reflect stimulus intensity changes more precisely than N1/P2 slopes, and should therefore be evaluated in future studies of individual differences in augmenting/reducing.

The aim of this paper is to examine the use of psychophysiological and/or psychophysical measures employed as (a) tools aimed at diagnosing personality/temperament traits and (b) criteria for estimating the construct validity of personality/temperament inventories. The exploration is based on three diferent sources: (1) data collected mainly within the neo‐Pavlovian approach on CNS properties; (2) selected examples of studies in the domain of sensation‐seeking, neuroticism, and extraversion; and (3) theoretical considerations regarding the specificity of phenomena being measured by means of psychometric and psychophysiological/psychophysical scores. It is concluded that psychophysiological and psychophysical measures may be used for the assessment of personality/temperament traits or for estimating the construct validity of psychometric tools applied in personality (temperament) research under very strict requirements and limited circumstances only. In most of the studies conducted up to now, these circumstances and requirements have not been fulfilled.
